Youth Services Interns

Are you passionate about inspiring young minds and fostering a love for reading and learning? Do you want to positively impact your community while gaining valuable experience in a dynamic library environment? Look no further - Garfield County Libraries seeks enthusiastic individuals to join us at each of our branch libraries as Youth Services Interns!

As a Youth Services Intern, you'll embark on a 12-week journey where you'll dive into the world of library services for children and teens. You'll work alongside our dedicated team of librarians and library staff to create innovative programs, engage young readers, and spark curiosity in the hearts and minds of our youth.

The Youth Services Internship will have unique opportunities that allow for a broad exploration of youth library services, and some examples of those opportunities are:

  • Assist with planning and implementing exciting children's and teen programs that vary from storytimes and craft workshops to fun with technology and book clubs.
  • Get creative with designing eye-catching displays that captivate imaginations and encourage exploration.
  • Provide friendly and knowledgeable assistance to young library users and their caregivers, helping them discover new books, navigate digital resources, and develop essential literacy skills.
  • Collaborate with local schools, youth organizations, and community partners to promote library services and expand outreach efforts.

Our Youth Services Interns will get hands-on experience in youth librarianship and library programming, perfect for students pursuing degrees in Early Childhood Education, Library Science, Education, or related fields. Qualifications:

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Reliable, takes accountability.
  • Desire and ability to work with children and families daily.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse population.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately complete assigned tasks.
  • Basic computer skills (keyboarding with minimal errors and using a simple online database).
  • Ability to use Google Suite - Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets.
  • Ability to sort books and other materials alphabetically and numerically.
  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbally and in writing in the English language.
  • Display initiative to take on additional tasks under the direction of the Branch Manager.

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Preferred:

  • Enrolled or has completed an Early Childhood Education degree or equivalent.
  • Prior experience working with children.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in Spanish.

This internship is paid $21.12/hour; is part-time at 20 hours per week, and is 12 weeks. Benefits include paid sick time and a voluntary 457 retirement plan with employer match of up to 3%.

We anticipate interns starting between mid-May and early-June, and we'll work with our interns to set a start date that works for them as well as us.
