Youth Sevices Library Assistant

Under the direction of the Youth Manager, this team member provides assistance to customers, ensures the smooth operation and circulation of material, develops library collection, supervises, trains, provides feedback to the manager for library clerk evaluations, and promotes the library at community events and in the library.

DUTIES:

  • Supervises and directs the activities of the department, including setting workflow priorities; seeing that appropriate procedures and policies are followed; and work is accomplished.
  • Trains, coordinates, direct, and evaluate the work and training of staff in regard to the circulation module.
  • Performs various tasks associated with circulation, including but not limited to checking material in and out; interlibrary loan services, telephone renewals, and collecting fines or donations.
  • Assists customers with selections and provides loan policy, directional, referral and reference information in response to customer questions.
  • Routinely shelves material and reads shelves.
  • Responsible for collection development tasks such as reading reviews, ordering materials, budgeting, and weeding as assigned by the Youth Services Manager.
  • Develops and facilitates programs and displays for youth.
  • Creates materials such as flyers and social media posts to promote programs and events.
  • Provides computer assistance for patrons with basic technological needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Keyboarding and general office experience.
  • Some previous library or work experience preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of library methods and procedures.
  • Ability to operate library machines properly.
  • Keyboarding and filing ability.
  • Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
  • Willingness to maintain skills in above mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Communication skills: effectively communicate ideas and information both in
  • written and oral form.
  • Reading ability: effectively read and understand information contained in
  • memoranda, reports and bulletins, etc.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions: effectively follow instructions from
  • supervisor, verbally and in written form.
  • Mathematical ability: calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction,
  • multiplication and division) without the aid of a calculator.
  • Time management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $13.55 - $16.93 per hour
