About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia&rsquo;s security, enhancing Australia&rsquo;s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia&rsquo;s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests. 

About the position
The Consular and Passport Officer manages the provision of consular, passport and notarial services to Australian citizens in Iran and other countries of Ankara Embassy&rsquo;s accreditation in accordance with departmental guidelines. The position supports consular enquiries and will be required to provide on the ground consular support including arrests/detentions, hospitalisations, medical evacuations, deaths, and whereabouts cases of Australian citizens.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
<ul><li>Manage consular enquiries and provide on the ground consular support including arrests/detentions, hospitalisations, medical evacuations, deaths, and whereabouts cases of Australian citizens.</li>
<li>Provide a range of passport and notarial services, including conducting client interviews in accordance with the Australian Passports Act.</li>
<li>Provide timely advice and reporting on consular and passport cases, including sensitive or complex matters.</li>
<li>Develop and maintain a strong network of key contacts across the region, including regular liaison with local authorities in relation to consular and passport matters.</li>
<li>Maintain and operate consular and passport-related databases, filing systems, records, and statistics.</li>
<li>Perform sub cashier duties and manage the safe custody and accountability of public monies in accordance with financial policy.</li>
<li>Provide backup support for other roles during periods of absence or peak periods.</li></ul> 

 Qualifications/Experience
<ul><li>Strong oral and written communication skills in English and Farsi, including the ability to undertake translation tasks.</li>
<li>Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise with government representatives, and develop and maintain a wide range of relevant contacts.</li>
<li>Strong ability to think strategically, locate, synthesise, analyse and communicate complex information and make decisions using sound judgement, expertise and knowledge.</li>
<li>High-level prioritisation and organisational skills, including the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines</li>
<li>Ability to work flexibly, independently and in a diverse team environment.</li>
<li>Willingness to travel, domestically and internationally, for work purposes as required.</li>
<li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications. 
</li></ul>Selection Criteria

Responses to the selection criteria should be submitted in English, but at least one the selection criteria response should be in written in Farsi to assess the language level.
A. Well-developed written and oral communication skills in English and Farsi, and the proven ability to communicate empathetically and clearly with people from diverse backgrounds.
B. Effective judgement and decision-making skills with a demonstrated ability to apply legislation and policies.
C. Strong administrative skills, including good attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records and filing systems in accordance with policies and procedures.
D. Experience in building and sustaining effective relationships with team members and internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
E. Ability to take initiative, set priorities and organise work effectively and efficiently, completing projects and assignments with limited supervision.
