The Library Associate II classification is a rewarding, albeit physically demanding position that is responsible for providing friendly, responsive customer service to patrons and clerical support. Primary duties include checking in and checking out materials, registering patrons for library cards, collecting fees, resolving patron account disputes, providing basic information services for Library patrons, and assisting patrons with the use of Library equipment and resources.</div><div></div><div><br>
Additional responsibilities may include enforcing the Community Use Agreement; maintaining computer and manual files; processing new materials, reserves and department interlibrary loan requests; answering telephones, typing and filing records, data entry, maintaining statistics and providing support in shelving and retrieving materials, when needed.</div></div><p></p>
<div><h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Job Responsibilities</b></h2></div>
<p></p><div><div><b>Provide Circulation and Lending Services for Patrons:</b> Serves as a front desk customer service representative. Provides friendly, responsive customer service to patrons; checks materials in and out; renews and reserves materials; collects fees; registers patrons for library cards; resolves patron account issues; applies the Library&rsquo;s circulation policies and procedures; gives directions or information to patrons regarding the location and use of Library materials, equipment and resources; and assesses the nature of, responding to, and effectively resolving, a variety of related issues.</div><div></div><div><b><br>
Assists with the Flow and Organization of Library Materials:</b> Sorts, files, shelves and routes books and a wide variety of other materials; lifts and transports books and materials using book carts, hand trucks and similar equipment; uses automated systems; locates and retrieves materials for processing; maintains the order and appearance of materials, re-shelves as needed; and retrieves materials for patrons and Library staff.</div><div></div><div><b><br>
Enforcement of the Library&rsquo;s Policies and Procedures:</b> Applies the Library&rsquo;s borrower policies and circulation procedures when interacting with patrons at circulation desks. Assists to enforce the Community Use Agreement from a de-escalation framework to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for patrons.</div><div></div><div><b><br>
Performs Support Duties:</b> Gathers information or data; maintains records and files; compiles statistics; and assists with various projects such as processing damaged materials, updating records and/or developing reports. Assists with shelving and sorting materials, when needed.</div></div><p></p>
<div><h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Qualifications</b></h2></div>
<p></p><div><div><b>Education: </b>A high school diploma or a Graduate Equivalency Degree (GED) is required.</div><div></div><div><b><br>
Customer Service Experience: </b>Minimum of two years of work experience providing customer service to the general public, applying exemplary customer service standards in dealing with complex customer issues. A candidate&rsquo;s experience must demonstrate the ability to apply customer service standards in dealing with the public on complex customer issues as they pertain to organizational policies and procedures. Previous experience working in a library setting is preferred.</div><div></div><div><b><br>
Excellent Written and Verbal Communication Skills:</b> Candidates must be able to effectively respond to patron communications in person and on the telephone, specifically the ability to listen to and understand customer concerns, assess available options, and respond accurately and appropriately. Candidates must also be able to respond to patron requests for directional assistance. Candidates must be able to effectively communicate in English, verbally and in writing, as well as comprehend spoken and written English.</div><div></div><div><b><br>
Experience using Personal Computers and Office Equipment:</b> Candidates must have experience operating point-of-sale/service computer terminals that use menu-based commands to obtain, interpret, and display data and information related to customer accounts. Candidates must have experience with using Microsoft Office applications (Outlook email, Excel and Word), internet browsers and online catalogs. Candidates must have experience using general office equipment, such as fax machines, photocopiers, printers and cash registers.</div><div></div><div><b><br>
Organizational Skills:</b> Candidates must be able to learn to sort books or other materials alphabetically and numerically, quickly, accurately and safely, and must be able to learn sorting and library filing schemes, such as the Dewey Decimal system. Candidates must also be able to organize and maintain information in an electronic format in shared network files.</div><div></div><div><b><br>
Other Required Skills and Abilities:</b> Candidates must be flexible in adjusting their work hours and locations. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work with others as part of a team on projects and have the ability to understand and apply verbal and written instructions. Candidates must also be able to bend, stretch, stoop, and lift bins up to 40 pounds in weight and push wheeled book carts weighing up to 200 pounds. Candidates must also have the ability to squeeze and release hand brakes on wheeled book carts.</div><div></div><div><b><br>

About the Position</b></p><p>
The Assistant Director of Library Programs and Engagement will oversee the current Equity Learning and Engagement Services (ELES) team. The Assistant Director position will join the Library Experience and Engagement (LEED) Leadership Team, will be part of the LEED Management Team, and will report directly to the LEED Director. This position will help shape and implement the goals of LEED as guided by the Library&rsquo;s Strategic Plan.</p><p>
This position is currently one of three Assistant Director positions that report directly to the Director of LEED. This position will oversee, guide and direct staff in the operations of the Library&rsquo;s system wide programs and services to Seattle&rsquo;s diverse community.</p></div><p></p>

Provide leadership and participate fully in the development of the Library&rsquo;s programs and service deliverables. Acquire and analyze information and develop reports and recommendations assessing current services and supporting development of new services and program initiatives.</li><li><b>
Plan, develop and implement race and social equity principles into Library programs and service deliverables. </b>Work in conjunction with other city departments, the community, external partners, and Library staff in creating an organization free of institutionalized racism.</li><li><b>
Maintain and enhance Outcomes Based Planning and Evaluation (OBPE) through Service Design. </b>Utilize Human Centered Design principles in the development and implementation of an OBPE framework that drives Community engagement activities, programming, and new service initiatives while continually assessing and reviewing existing engagement activities and core services. Manage the Outcomes Reporting process and supervise reporting on outcomes to the Board, the Seattle Public Library Foundation, Friends, library staff and community partners.</li><li><b>
Administer staffing. </b>Develop and implement staffing models and plans to support programs and service goals. Provide general staffing administration and support managers in the coordination and supervision of staff. Participate in and/or support the recruitment, selection and onboarding of new staff members. Engage in teambuilding and model and develop the competencies of managers and staff. Monitor and track staffing activities and maintain needed systems and records. Develop staffing budgets, reports and studies as needed. Coordinate staffing activities and development with Human Resources, Labor, Library Administration, managers, and other partners.</li><li><b>
Manage, develop and innovate operational systems. </b>In collaboration with the Assistant Directors of Library Experience, evaluate and continually improve systems for the management of essential operations, analyzing resource needs, and directing staff effectively to support Library objectives. Coordinate unit and individual work plans with overall divisional priorities and objectives. Plan for and develop regular status reports, conduct analytical studies and evaluations. Assist the Director with annual and long-range planning, including setting goals and recommending strategies.</li><li><b>
Manage projects. </b>In collaboration with the Assistant Directors of Library Experience, assist managers and the LEED Management Team in setting short- and long-term objectives, planning and implementing unit and individual projects. Attend project-related meetings and ensure timely communication between divisions, teams, structured groups, administrators, and other partners. Make presentations to individuals and groups.</li><li><b>
Manage budgets. </b>Assist with developing operations, staffing, project and other budgets and coordinating them with overall division budgets. Monitor expenditures and develop financial reports and studies in collaboration with the Finance team. In coordination with the director of LEED, develop an annual budget for Programs &amp; Engagement. Compile and analyze statistics, outcomes and impacts along with other relevant data in support of budget requests.</li><li><b>
Maintain and enhance the Seattle Public Library Foundation (SPLF) and Friends of the Library relationships. </b>Manage Foundation and Friends funds and provide reports on programs and services funded by these two non-profit groups, and maintain channels of communication with the Foundation CEO, Friends President and staff to develop donor interest, advocacy, and support.</li><li><b>
Partner with community organizations and represent the Library to the public. </b>Participate in community activities, collaborate internally to identify and build on collaborative opportunities, establish, support and maintain relations with community partners, and support managers and staff in responding to public concerns and interests.</li><li><b>

Ensure daily staffing needs are met by compiling documentation, such as: permanent transfers, temporary transfers, administrative time off, release from duty, apparatus memos, emails, and letters utilizing established policies.</li><li>
Enter data to the Chief&rsquo;s Journal, Activity Scheduler, and SharePoint.</li><li>
Produce weekly reports compiling information from multiple sources to share with the Leadership Team.</li><li>

Coordinate all Operations Division Executive travel and training. Track Division expenditures, manage and monitor travel/training budget, authorize expenses and reimbursements. Process all travel invoices from members to be paid by the Department.</li><li>
