Under general supervision of the Shop Manager, this position performs vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.Who We AreThe County Public Works Department is responsible for the following divisions or areas of services.<ul><li>Public Works Administration</li><li>Roads, Bridge, and Sign Divisions</li><li>Vehicle Maintenance</li><li>Solid Waste Division</li><li>Building Maintenance Division</li></ul>Public Works Administration oversees the administration and financial operations of all programs, services, and projects of the Lewis and Clark County Public Works Department.The Road, Bridge, and Sign Divisions are responsible for maintaining County roads and bridges. During the winter they provide County residents with snow removal services such as plowing and sanding. They oversee the design and reconstruction of existing roads and bridges, perform maintenance projects such as pothole repairs, chip seals, striping, signage, safety modifications, drainage, and storm water improvements.The Vehicle Maintenance Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of County vehicles. This includes large equipment such as graders, backhoes, loaders, snowplows, dump, patch, and water trucks. Look here to learn more and see if you may qualify!</li><li>https://fed-pro.org/public-service/</li></ul>Other BenefitsIncludes:<ul><li>Working in a fast-paced environment;</li><li>Cost of living increases;</li><li>Market adjustments;</li><li>Step based wage increases;</li><li>Paid parental leave.</li></ul>Duties<ul><li>Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair;</li><li>Troubleshoots and diagnoses issues with equipment;</li><li>Inspects gasoline or diesel-powered road construction equipment and trucks;</li><li>Performs scheduled and non-scheduled equipment services and inspections;</li><li>Performs major repairs to all equipment including but not limited to trucks, snowplows, dozers, rollers, graders, loaders, auxiliary engines, air compressors, and hydraulic hoists and pumps;</li><li>Assembles, installs, and fabricates sander boxes, plows, water tanks, hydraulic systems, or other related equipment;</li><li>Fabricates custom parts for road equipment and attachments;</li><li>Completes necessary shop maintenance records;</li><li>Prioritizes tasks and projects;</li><li>Maintains a safe, organized, and clean work environment;</li><li>May operate road construction or snow removal equipment;</li><li>Responds to service calls away from the shop;</li><li>Assists Lead Shop Mechanic and/or Shop Manager with parts, fluids, and inventory;</li><li>Performs other duties as assigned.</li></ul>This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive list of activities, duties or responsibilities required for this job. Duties, responsibilities, and tasks may change with or without notice.Examples of Knowledge <ul><li>Lewis and Clark County and Public Work policies and procedures;</li><li>Safety regulations and requirements;</li><li>Diesel and gasoline engine repair and maintenance, commercial and industrial power trains, and suspensions;</li><li>Proper protective equipment (PPE);</li><li>Hydraulic systems and related components;</li><li>Electrical systems, including starting, charging, emissions, and fuel delivery systems;</li><li>Truck and tractor trailers and related systems;</li><li>Arc and wire feed welding, oxyacetylene welding and cutting;</li><li>Metal repair, fabrication, layout, stress and metal properties.</li></ul>Examples of Skills &amp; Abilities <ul><li>Parts and technical manuals;</li><li>Communicate effectively in writing and orally with employees, the public, managers, and vendors;</li><li>Use various types of cutting and grinding tools according to prescribed standards;</li><li>Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;</li><li>Responds to service calls away from the shop;</li><li>Establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and citizens.</li></ul>QualificationsThe above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or equivalent and three (3) years&rsquo; experience as a mechanic doing overhaul, repair and maintenance work. Must have valid Class A Commercial Drivers&rsquo; license. Two (2) years of technical or factory school education preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.Special RequirementsMust have a CDL Class A Driver&rsquo;s License and pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.Physical DemandsMust be able to perform extensive standing and walking on concrete floors. Position performs work both indoor and outdoor environments. Position may perform work in weather and in conditions where dust, dirt, snow, ice, and debris are encountered. This position must be able to stand, twist, stoop, reach, push, pull, bend, kneel, squat, and lift to 50 pounds unassisted. Position requires work in, on, around, over and under equipment.
