Position Title: Mechanic

Organization: Lewis and Clark County Public Works

Pay Rate: $27.07 per hour to $28.66 per hour

Position Type/Status: Regular, Full-time, Non-exempt

Lewis and Clark County Public Works are currently recruiting for a mechanic to work in the Public Work’s Shop. Under general supervision of the Shop Manager, this position performs vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.

Who We Are

The County Public Works Department is responsible for the following divisions or areas of services.

  • Public Works Administration
  • Roads, Bridge, and Sign Divisions
  • Vehicle Maintenance
  • Solid Waste Division
  • Building Maintenance Division

Public Works Administration oversees the administration and financial operations of all programs, services, and projects of the Lewis and Clark County Public Works Department.

The Road, Bridge, and Sign Divisions are responsible for maintaining County roads and bridges. During the winter they provide County residents with snow removal services such as plowing and sanding. They oversee the design and reconstruction of existing roads and bridges, perform maintenance projects such as pothole repairs, chip seals, striping, signage, safety modifications, drainage, and storm water improvements.

The Vehicle Maintenance Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of County vehicles. This includes large equipment such as graders, backhoes, loaders, snowplows, dump, patch, and water trucks. They also perform light vehicle maintenance on pickups and sedans.

The City of Helena Solid Waste Division is responsible for the management of the Lewis and Clark County Landfill, the Marysville Container Site, the closed Scratch Gravel Landfill, and represents the Department of Health on the Lincoln and Augusta Solid Waste Boards.

Duties

  • Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair;
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses issues with equipment;
  • Inspects gasoline or diesel-powered road construction equipment and trucks;
  • Performs scheduled and non-scheduled equipment services and inspections;
  • Performs major repairs to all equipment including but not limited to trucks, snowplows, dozers, rollers, graders, loaders, auxiliary engines, air compressors, and hydraulic hoists and pumps;
  • Assembles, installs, and fabricates sander boxes, plows, water tanks, hydraulic systems, or other related equipment;
  • Fabricates custom parts for road equipment and attachments;
  • Completes necessary shop maintenance records;
  • Prioritizes tasks and projects;
  • Maintains a safe, organized, and clean work environment;
  • May operate road construction or snow removal equipment;
  • Responds to service calls away from the shop;
  • Assists Lead Shop Mechanic and/or Shop Manager with parts, fluids, and inventory;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and citizens.

Qualifications

The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or equivalent and three (3) years’ experience as a mechanic doing overhaul, repair and maintenance work. Must have valid Class A Commercial Drivers’ license. Two (2) years of technical or factory school education preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Special Requirements

Must have a CDL Class A Driver’s License and pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.

Physical Demands

Must be able to perform extensive standing and walking on concrete floors. Position performs work both indoor and outdoor environments. Position may perform work in weather and in conditions where dust, dirt, snow, ice, and debris are encountered. This position must be able to stand, twist, stoop, reach, push, pull, bend, kneel, squat, and lift to 50 pounds unassisted. Position requires work in, on, around, over and under equipment. Must be able to operate test vehicles and equipment and to wear and work in personnel protective equipment.
