This classification performs various public library functions for a specific departmental project or other limited-term assignment under professional librarian guidance. This is paraprofessional work involving responsibility for the assigned area of responsibility and may be required to assign and oversee the work of others.</p><p><b>
Working Conditions</b><br>
Indoor library environment. Extended periods of sitting and standing regularly required. High noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment and books up to 25 lbs. alone; up to 50 lbs. with assistance. Able to push book truck and shelve books. May be assigned to any Manatee County Public Library System location. Assigned schedule will include Saturday and evening hours.</p></div><p></p>

Applies working knowledge of basic library practices, procedures and related equipment.</p><p>
Interprets library policies and procedures to the general public and staff in a clear and tactful manner. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff and the general public.</p><p>
Covers the public desk as assigned.</p><p>
May lead or assist with public computer classes and equipment/material instruction.</p><p>
May participate in acquisition and cataloging functions.</p><p>
May arrange branch exhibits and displays and programming for all age groups.</p><p>
May prepare statistical and other monthly and/or annual reports.</p><p>
May perform interlibrary loan processing.</p><p><b>
Performs other related duties as assigned, including participation in emergency or disaster response activities, as required and consistent with the employee&rsquo;s qualifications, essential job functions, and applicable federal and Florida law.

<p></p><div><p>High school graduate or equivalent.</p><p>
One (1) or more years of customer service experience.</p></div><p></p>

<p></p><div><p>Some college coursework is preferred.</p><p>
Prior library experience and shift lead/supervisory experience desired.</p><p><b>

Able to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions. Organizes own work and completes tasks within assigned timeframes. Able to resolve routine situations and problems.</p><p>
General knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance necessary to successfully perform job duties.</p><p>
General knowledge and understanding of computer applications and software programs required to perform job duties, including library-related software applications.</p><p>
Good written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills to be able to interact professionally and effectively with co-workers, management, the general public, and other stakeholders. Able to communicate information that requires explanation or interpretation.</p><p>
Capable of working under moderate supervision.</p></div><p></p>

Supervision may be exercised over library support staff. Work involves working both with the public and behind the scenes, handling branch and/or section responsibilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian II or Librarian III.Working ConditionsIndoor/Office situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 25 lbs. alone; up to 50 lbs. with assistance.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.Area of Assignment: Cataloger Librarian IProcesses new, donated, and existing library materials. Conducts regular physical processing and maintenance of circulating items, as well as bibliographic and item maintenance of records in the catalog. Communicates with representatives of library branches to verify maintenance requests and changes to classifications within the collection. Experience with OCLC Connexion Client, metadata editing tools, MARC records and cataloging rules preferred.Provides reference and readers advisory services to the general public.Develops pathfinders, bibliographies, brochures, booklets and newsletters.Performs basic cataloging and/or routine circulation tasks.Compiles bibliographies, bookmarks, reading lists, etc., as necessary.May plan, coordinate, and present adult and juvenile programming, both inside the library and in community facilities, as requested.May act as library liaison to community groups as necessary. Develops community contacts.Maintains currency in professional library issues, developments, materials, and equipment with emphasis on current and future trends in technology and literacy. Attends training and meetings; in addition to, participating in professional library organizations.Participates in collection management routines.Assists and instructs patrons in the use of library services, resources and technology.Interprets and enforces relevant Library/County policies and procedures to the public. Recommends policy changes to immediate supervisor or administration.Aids in coordinating work of volunteer, clerical and professional staff. May schedule, train and/or supervise clerical staff, volunteers, public service workers, and AARP workers.Regularly attends and is available during operating hours.
