Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) Assistant State Attorney – Advanced Felony Unit

Overview: 
This is a trial-intensive position, as many of the offenders have extensive violent histories, with many having firearms mandatory minimum sentences and enhancements. VCU ASAs are assigned to two divisions, so great time management skills are essential. Applicants should have extensive felony level trial experience and must be current on their intake responsibilities.
 
The typical caseload would include attempted murders, kidnappings, home invasion robberies, carjackings, and armed robberies with a firearm. Those with significant criminal law experience are invited to apply for this specialty position.
 
Requirements: 
Must possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in criminal law, either as a prosecutor or defense attorney.
 Prior jury trial experience is required.
 Proficient computer skills are essential, including working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. The ability to adapt and learn new software and technologies commonly used in this position is crucial.

Position: 
Problem-Solving Court Attorney
 
Location: 
Position covers both Orange and Osceola Counties. The candidate will be based out of the Orange County main office.

Overview: 
This position is ideal for an experienced attorney with an understanding of the value of alternative sentencing and case processing options for vulnerable members of our community.
 
Key Responsibilities: 
Specialty Court Attorney Duties: 
Serve as prosecuting attorney for Mental Health, Veteran, Drug, and Opioid Courts, representing the state in court hearings and staffing meetings.
 Conduct detailed reviews of specialty court case referrals to determine eligibility and appropriate recommendations.
 Collaborate with judges, treatment providers, defense counsel, and probation officers in multidisciplinary teams.
 Ensure compliance with Judge Latimore’s requirement that all pleas, contracts, and court documents be electronically reviewed, signed, and submitted in advance (with some exceptions).
 Manage the preparation and finalization of court lists at least 48 hours prior to hearings.
 Administer the VOP Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARN) offer process with APD and related parties.
 Make plea offers, sanctions recommendations, and assist with problem-solving court participant graduations and contract renewals.
 Support continuous improvements in court processes and program outcomes.
 
Qualifications: 
Juris Doctor (JD) and admission to the state bar.
 Minimum 3-5 years criminal law experience; background in specialty courts, or related programs preferred.
 Thorough knowledge of mental health, substance use, veterans’ issues, and criminal justice procedures.
 Strong organizational skills with ability to manage complex schedules and large caseloads.
 Exceptional legal writing, research, and oral advocacy skills.
 Experience in training, supervising, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
 Commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and equity principles.
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
Prior prosecutorial or defense experience in specialty or problem-solving courts.
 Knowledge of diversion program best practices and court-based treatment approaches.
 Experience managing or developing program workflows and staff teams.

Overview: 
The ASA will be responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor domestic violence cases from intake through trial and VOPs. This position involves working closely with victim advocates and paralegals who assist with case intake.
 
This role provides an opportunity to support some of the most vulnerable victims in our community while allowing for significant growth as a prosecutor and litigator. Cases typically start as misdemeanors, but many require up-filing to felonies, and there may be instances where defendants have related open felony cases. This structure facilitates close collaboration with felony domestic violence Assistant State Attorneys (ASAs) to resolve cases effectively.
 
In this position, you will learn how to conduct intakes, evaluate cases for evidence-based prosecution, and develop additional skills for handling violent crime cases as you progress to felony cases. The role also involves a considerable amount of litigation, including motions and hearings related to Stand Your Ground (SYG) motions, Williams Rule hearings, bond revocations, and violations of probation (VOPs). Additionally, it is a trial-active position.
 
Requirements: 
Must have a minimum of 1 year of experience in criminal law, either in a prosecutorial or defense capacity.
 Prior bench and/or jury trial experience is preferred

This position is ideal for a motivated experienced legal professional interested in joining a fast-paced team responsible for reviewing a high volume of cases for potential filing in both County and Circuit Court.
 
Key Responsibilities: 
Review law enforcement reports and evidence to determine appropriate charges and legal sufficiency for filing decisions.
 Perform in-depth legal research and apply current statutory and case law to case assessments.
