The Villages Charter School (VCS) opened in August 2000 and is one of the most successful public charter schools in Florida. In fact, VCS has been a "High Performing Charter School", earned a "School of Excellence" and has received 22 straight "A" ratings from the Florida Department of Education! This year, VCS earned the “Cognia School and Systems of Distinction” from the international accreditation group Cognia.

The Villages Charter School spans two campuses. Our Buffalo Ridge campus has three elementary attendance centers and one middle school building. Our newest campus, “Middleton”, opened in August 2023 with a K-8 center and a state-of-the-art high school complex.

VCS currently serves over 4100 students, kindergarten through 12th grades with an overall capacity of 6500 (500 students per grade level) across both campuses.

DESCRIPTION:

The Villages Charter School is accepting applications for school Guardians for both the Buffalo Ridge and Middleton campus for the 2026-2027 School Year. This is a full-time position responsible for performing a variety of duties related to protecting students, staff, visitors, equipment, facilities, and school grounds under the supervision and direction of the School Safety Specialist/Designee.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

To contribute to providing security and safety services and protecting the life and wellbeing of students, staff, and visitors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The expectations include the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and posture at all times.
  • Provides security and surveillance to the school campus, including patrolling parking lots and entire school grounds.
  • Provides security to school and community functions, including after school and extracurricular activities as needed.
  • Investigates, monitors, and reports to administration, and when appropriate, law enforcement, suspicious activity, including but not limited to theft, vandalism, and criminal mischief.
  • Communicates with the School Safety Specialist/Designee, school administrators, students, and staff, regarding safety and security related concerns and issues; works cooperatively with local law enforcement, other agencies and other district personnel as needed.
  • Responds to emergency situations and takes appropriate actions in accordance with established guidelines and state laws.
  • Monitors students, staff, visitors, vendor, etc. within a variety of school environments (e.g. grounds, hallways, media center, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of all persons on school grounds.
  • Continuous heightened awareness of his or her surroundings.
  • Reads and responds to email communications from district and school-based administration.
  • Builds relationships with the county’s and/or local municipalities law enforcement agency, fire rescue, students, and stakeholders.
  • Assists in suppressing disturbances and security incidents according to district established policies and guidelines.
  • Deescalates confrontations between students, parents, visitors, and community members while on campus. Works to assist school administration in order to address and investigate all incidents.
  • Assists District personnel, school administration and law enforcement with annual and on-going school campus threat assessments.
  • Utilizes and monitors surveillance technology to ensure campus safety.
  • Serves on the school safety committee.
  • Assists with and monitors school safety drills.
  • Observation and supervision of school carlines to include other parent pick up and drop off traffic areas may be needed at times but at no time will traffic control and/or directing traffic off campus be permitted by a School Guardian.
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • A minimum of five (5) years within the last ten (10) years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer in “good standing” at time of employment separation. Prior applicable military experience (excluding military reservist experience) with an honorable discharge may be substituted for law enforcement experience.
  • Must pass a complete and comprehensive background investigation with fingerprinting.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver’s license.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to accurately communicate facts.
  • Obtain the requirements outlined below within 90 days of appointment:
    • Hold a valid license issued under s.790.06 (License to carry concealed weapon or firearm.)
    • Successful completion of 144 hours of comprehensive firearm safety and proficiency training conducted by Criminal Justice Standards and Commission-Certified Instructors.
    • Pass any psychological and/or background evaluation administered by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office for the purpose of program qualification.
    • Successfully complete a crisis intervention training and certification through The Villages Charter School safety team.
    • Successfully complete CPR and Basic First Aid training and certification.
  • An earned associate’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Prior experience in law enforcement in a K-12 setting
  • Prior experience working with students and adolescents.
  • Must pass the initial Guardian Firearms Training Course and annual requalification.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to manipulate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

197 days- Non-exempt. Length of the work year and hours of employment are those established by the Board.
