2026 Spring and Summer Internships – Oregon Outdoors Journalism Interns
The Statesman Journal/statesmanjournal.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is hiring two outdoors journalism interns in spring and summer 2026 that pay $18.00 an hour and allow for exploring and writing about Oregon’s wildest places. The internships require working 40 hours per week for 16 weeks.
The interns will work with Statesman Journal outdoors reporter Zach Urness to craft stories, photos, videos and podcasts that center on issues such as wildfires, outdoor recreation and the environment. Interns also will have the opportunity to travel to unique outdoor destinations and write about what makes them special.
Candidates should have some journalism experience and strong writing and reporting skills. Podcast reporting and production skills are a plus. Hard work and hustle are the most important attributes. Your cover letter should demonstrate your love of the outdoors and telling important stories.

Responsibilities:
  • Tackle daily assignments that could include breaking news reporting, community news, features, online production assignments, social media, research and fact checking, database work, investigative work, audio and video editing and visual journalism.
  • Gather information from sources and through any means commonly available for news stories.
  • Interview subjects in person, over the telephone or via email.
  • Travel quickly to wherever the news occurs or is being disseminated.
  • Research written materials, graphic and photographic materials, as well as audio and video recordings.
  • Quickly and accurately report information, either orally or electronically, for publication.
  • Help in the production of photographs, videos and graphics that would be helpful in supporting stories.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions.
Requirements:
  • Degree-seeking student currently enrolled at a college or university. Students must have completed at least two years of college. Preference given to more advanced students. Those who have completed undergraduate work or are in graduate programs also accepted.
  • Command of AP writing, spelling, grammar and style.
  • Solid fact checking and reporting skills.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented and flexible.
  • Open to new ideas, new experiences and learning on the job.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Technical skills (will vary depending on the assignment).
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively inside and outside the organization.
  • Understanding of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • These positions require a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
