The State of New Hampshire, Department of Justice, Criminal Justice Bureau, Transportation Safety Prosecutor's Office has a full-time temporary vacancy for an Investigative Paralegal.

Summary:

To initiate, conduct and assist with investigations and perform paraprofessional law-related duties in support of attorneys and investigators related to the Traffic Safety Resource program. To support traffic safety litigation for the prosecution and in defense of the State

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS : Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education : Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with a major study in legal studies or related field and possession of a Paralegal Certificate from a certified paralegal program. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience : Four years’ experience in civil litigation, criminal justice, real estate law, legal research, paralegal work, investigations, or human resources investigations. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

License/Certification: Valid driver’s license or access to transportation for statewide travel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working in a law practice tasked with handling multiple fields. Excellent interpersonal, analytical and computer skills. Proficient in data analysis and interpretation.

The work of an employee in trainee status in this position shall be overseen by a fully qualified individual. An employee in trainee status shall meet the minimum qualifications within the period of time specified on the SJD, not to exceed one year of being hired into this position.

Responsibilities:

Assists investigators and attorneys with the review and analysis of investigations and prosecutions resulting from traffic-related Driving While Intoxicated and Drugged Driver cases. Initiates, conducts, and monitors the status of investigations and identifies specific issues or problems to aid in the case review.

Reviews and analyzes highly technical information and legal documents to obtain and verify data and formulates recommendations for work strategies and disposition. Interprets State statutes, rules, and regulations for use in investigations and prosecutions. Responds to right-to-know requests and provides legal contact between the public and the Department of Justice on behalf of the Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor.

Utilizes computer programs, online sources, and case management software to compile data and statistics, conduct research, and access information, which may influence civil or criminal procedures. Assist investigators and attorneys with investigations and trial preparation and creates summaries and reports.

Participates in witness interviews and administrative subpoena hearings to develop interview plans and strategies and to fill in evidentiary gaps in the case. Attends court hearings and proceedings as necessary and testifies to statements made during interviews or administrative subpoena hearings, when necessary.

Serves as a liaison for victims and witnesses in traffic related criminal prosecutions to explain process and legal requirements. Coordinates with all trial witnesses to arrange for preparatory meetings and appearance at court. Drafts trial subpoenas, coordinates service, verifies information, and ensures that all witnesses are present for trial or court hearings.

Proofreads court filings to ensure accuracy before submitting to state and/or federal court. Closes investigations and reviews closed files to identify confidential documents/information that may require redaction and/or deletion in accordance with various legal agreements and standards.

Assists the Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor prepare for trainings to law enforcement, prosecutors and primary stakeholders on procedures, issues and data surrounding Driving While Intoxicated and Drugged Driver incidents.

Organizes trial exhibits into a succinct trial presentation format using trial presentation software to ensure that all materials are available and appropriate and strategically organized for presentation to the court or jury. Reviews incoming correspondence and legal documents; drafts and edits responsive correspondence and legal documents, in cooperation with attorneys, to ensure accuracy, clarity and compliance with pertinent statutes and court rules.
