Position Type: Full-Time, with Union Affiliation (UFT)
Pay: To be determined upon successful hiring, as compensation will follow the established salary schedule.

Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated 5th Grade ELA Teacher to join our Upper Elementary team. The ideal candidate will be committed to fostering a love of reading and writing, cultivating student voice, and helping all learners grow through rigorous instruction aligned to New York State Standards. The teacher will design lessons that emphasize higher-order questioning, discussion-based learning, and targeted progress monitoring, ensuring every student demonstrates measurable growth in literacy.

Responsibilities
Instruction and Curriculum

  • Plan and deliver high-quality ELA instruction aligned to NYS Next Generation Standards.
  • Integrate authentic texts, writing tasks, and discussion-based structures (turn and talk, think-pair-share, Socratic seminar) into daily lessons.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to support diverse learners, including ELLs and students with IEPs, in an ICT and/or inclusive setting.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring

  • Administer formative and summative assessments to track student learning.
  • Progress monitor student achievement at least three times per week and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Use data to identify learning gaps, differentiate instruction, and set individual goals with students.

Classroom Culture

  • Create a safe, inclusive, and discussion-rich classroom environment where students feel empowered to share their ideas.
  • Establish and maintain high expectations for student engagement, effort, and achievement.
  • Support the development of student independence, accountability, and collaboration.

Professional Collaboration

  • Work closely with grade-level colleagues, coordinators, and school leaders to align curriculum and share best practices.
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), cluster meetings, and peer observation cycles.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development focused on questioning and discussion techniques, progress monitoring, and student-centered learning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • New York State Teaching Certification (Childhood Education Grades 1–6 or Literacy preferred).
  • Demonstrated success in teaching ELA at the elementary or middle school level.
  • Strong understanding of literacy development, reading comprehension strategies, and writing instruction.
  • Commitment to TRCS’s mission and goals, including fostering rigorous student discourse and measurable academic growth.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $61,497.78 - $94,061.84 per year
