The University of Arizona's College of Science invites you to apply to the role of Academic Advising Professional I. The College of Science seeks a candidate passionate about supporting student success. The Academic Advisor plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention and persistence by building formative relationships with students to encourage engagement with opportunities to develop personally and professionally. This Advisor will serve undergraduates in Astronomy, Physics, and Applied Physics for the MAIN campus, but is also part of a larger team of advisors that may serve a wider range of science majors depending on future needs. The position reports centrally to the College but has strong connections to the Departments of Astronomy and Physics.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising & Student Development Duties

  • With senior advisors, the incumbent presents academic and program information to new First-year and Transfer students and their guests at New Student Orientation and processes students for readmission.
  • Assists students in course planning to meet academic requirements and/or career preparation.
  • Applies transfer credits from other academic institutions to the degree program (based on established articulation rules and precedents).
  • Advises students on University, College, and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • With the senior advisor, identifies or evaluates options for students who must petition for an exception to a course or program requirement. Makes approved adjustments to student’s program of study.
  • Monitors academic progress of students utilizing existing dashboards and reports to access data; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring), conducts student outreach, and refers students to appropriate campus resources for further assistance as needed.
  • Assesses students’ stage of development (academic, career, and personal) to promote academic growth by providing suitable developmental tasks and engagement opportunities. Helps students identify pertinent internships, club involvement, and volunteer work.

Advising Program & Additional Student Support

  • May provide input to the department on student achievements for award considerations or student barriers that they encounter through advising session.
  • This information may be used in various departmental undergraduate committees.
  • With the senior advisor, may assist with offering seminars, workshops, and other activities/events for student onboarding, building community, academic recovery, student engagement, graduation and/or student retention as time allows.

Administrative

  • Working with senior advisors, provides existing materials for students to more easily navigate their degree paths, such as 4-year plans and course checklists.
  • With direction from senior advisor, may assist with manual enrollment into department courses including research, preceptorships, and internships for university credit.
  • Processes degree checks/audits for students planning to graduate.
  • Lead by senior advisor, may assist with the planning and implementation of college and department events.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience is required.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University’s campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
