Job Summary:
The role of an academic tutor for student-athletes is pivotal in ensuring the holistic development and success of student-athletes both on and off the field. This position entails providing academic support and guidance to student-athletes to help them excel academically while balancing the demands of their athletic commitments. In addition to our tutors from the student body, we also seek non-student professionals with more specialized experience in various academic fields like Psychology, ASL, Geology, Anthropology, Economics, Spanish, and Law. In addition to tutoring, the lead tutor oversees and coordinates tutoring operations, mentors other tutors, ensures quality standards, and serves as a primary point of contact for academic support compliance and reporting.
Essential Functions (Responsibilities):
Provides one-on-one or group tutoring sessions to student-athletes in various subjects, including but not limited to mathematics, sciences, humanities, and languages.
Assists student-athletes in developing effective study habits, time management skills, and organizational strategies to enhance their academic performance.
Aids student-athletes in understanding course materials, assignments, and concepts by breaking down complex topics into manageable components.
Assists with test preparation strategies, including practice exams, review sessions, and test-taking techniques tailored to individual learning styles.
Offers guidance on writing skills, including essay structure, research methods, and proofreading to help student-athletes improve their writing proficiency.
Tracks and monitors the academic progress of student-athletes, communicates regularly with academic advisors to address any concerns, and submits session reports on time.
Connects student-athletes with additional academic resources, such as tutoring centers, writing labs, and academic workshops, to support their educational goals.
Ensures adherence to NCAA academic eligibility requirements and regulations governing academic support services for student-athletes.
- Supervises and trains tutoring staff, monitors session quality, manages scheduling and resource allocation, and collaborates with academic advisors to address complex student needs.
- Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate student-athlete schedules.
- Demonstrated proficiency in one or more academic subjects such as Psychology, ASL, Geology, Anthropology, Economics, Spanish, or Law.
- Strong understanding of subject matter in assigned tutoring areas.
- Awareness of effective learning strategies and academic support techniques.
- Basic knowledge of educational technology and online learning platforms.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for explaining complex concepts clearly.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple students and sessions.
- Proficiency in writing support, including grammar, structure, and research methods.
- Ability to build rapport and maintain professional relationships with diverse student populations.
- Ability to adapt tutoring methods to individual learning styles and needs.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to institutional and NCAA guidelines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Suite.
Equivalent Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Familiarity with NCAA academic eligibility requirements and compliance standards (or willingness to learn).
- 1 – 3 years of experience as an Academic Tutor.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced Degree in specialized field.
- Prior experience in tutoring, teaching, or academic support.
Special Job Dimensions:
This role involves sitting and communicating effectively, with occasional walking to assist or access resources. Manual dexterity is needed for writing, typing, and demonstrating concepts. Light lifting (up to 10 lbs) may occur. Good vision for close and distance tasks is required, along with strong interpersonal skills for frequent interaction and guidance.
