Academic Tutor-Student Federal Work Study Hourly

Position Overview

The Academic Tutor provides personalized support to students in need of extra literacy (pre-K through elementary) and numeracy instruction (K through 9th grade). Service is provided to students in the Lawrence Community at the Lawrence Public Library.

Job Description

100% Tutoring
  • Tutoring activities include, but are not limited to, reading aloud to students, providing students a chance to practice reading, facilitating activities to improve specific skills such as fluency and comprehension in reading/literacy, working through math problems with students, explaining concepts, and facilitating activities to improve specific skills such as conservation of number and automaticity in mathematics. Aside from tutoring, the tutor should also seek to be a positive role model providing students with the encouragement and support needed to improve each student's self-confidence and interest in reading/literacy/mathematics.
  • To promote progress in reading and math, the tutor will have a regular tutoring schedule with students and maintain consistent communication with parents.

Required Qualifications

  • Tutor MUST qualify for and accept Federal Work Study to become a tutor.
  • Tutor MUST have transportation to and from the Lawrence Public Library.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Children in schools, camp, or other settings.
  • Interest and passion for working with children in pre-Kindergarten through grade nine.
  • Self-motivation and desire to go "above and beyond" to promote student learning.
  • Responsibility and personal accountability for completing tasks; attention to details and deadlines.
  • Elementary or Middle/Secondary Education major.
  • Commit to working through the summer, with option to work into the academic year.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
