Position Overview

Under the direction of management, the Staff Accountant plays a key role in supporting the finance department and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records. This position reports directly to the Controller and is responsible for supporting daily accounting operations, month-end close processes, financial reporting, and trust accounting compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Accounting Operations

  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate posting of journal entries.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, trust/IOLTA accounts, and balance sheet schedules.
  • Process accounts payable, including invoice review, coding, and payment processing.
  • Support accounts receivable and billing functions as needed.
  • Manage employee expense reports and reimbursements.

Month-End & Financial Reporting

  • Prepare month-end journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Assist with preparation of monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and management reporting.
  • Perform regular general ledger account analysis.
  • Support forecasting and financial planning processes.
  • Assist with year-end close and tax preparation, including supporting documentation and schedules.

Legal Accounting & Trust Compliance

  • Monitor and maintain trust/IOLTA accounting compliance in accordance with applicable bar requirements.
  • Reconcile trust activity and ensure proper handling of client funds.
  • Support matter-level financial reporting and profitability analysis.

Internal Controls & Process Improvement

  • Maintain strong internal controls over financial transactions and reporting.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to increase accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, GAAP, and legal industry regulations.

Collaboration & Special Projects

  • Partner with the finance team on payroll-related accounting activities when applicable.
  • Support the Controller with financial analysis, reporting, and special projects.
  • Communicate professionally with attorneys, staff, vendors, and clients.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 2–5 years of accounting experience.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and core accounting principles.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and large data analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational ability, and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to pass background and credit checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with trust/IOLTA accounting.
  • Familiarity with legal billing systems or matter-based accounting platforms (Filevine experience is a plus).
  • Experience working in a law firm or professional services organization.
