Position Overview
Cyclum Nextgen Travel Centers is seeking an in-house Accountant in our Cornelius office to support day-to-day accounting operations across our growing portfolio of travel centers. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with travel center, fuel distribution, or convenience store experience. The position will work closely with finance leadership to ensure timely posting of transactions, accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and scalable processes as the business expands. The role is expected to grow into a more senior position, such as the Controller.
Key Responsibilities
1. Perform daily and monthly accounting activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance
2. Assist with revenue recognition across multiple revenue streams, including fuel sales, EV charging, in-store retail, and ancillary services
3. Reconcile point-of-sale (POS) systems, cash activity, and related transactions across multiple operating locations
4. Support accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, including vendor invoicing, fleet billing, and collections activities
5. Assist with cash planning, bank account management, and bank reconciliations
6. Support the preparation of monthly financial statements and management reporting packages
7. Develop and help standardize weekly and monthly reporting formats that incorporate best practices, consistency, and scalability across the organization
8. Help establish, document, and improve accounting procedures, internal controls, and operational processes within a growing multi-site environment
9. Assist in developing scalable reconciliation frameworks and financial support processes as the organization expands
10. Collaborate with leadership to evaluate accounting system needs and scalability, including potential implementation or transition to QuickBooks Enterprise or another ERP/accounting platform
11. Support external audit and tax preparation activities, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentation
12. Collaborate cross-functionally with operations teams, site managers, vendors, external partners, and internal accounting support staff
13. Support ad hoc financial analysis, process improvement initiatives, and special projects as needed
Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
2. 2–5 years of accounting experience required, preferably within travel centers, truck stops, convenience stores (c-store), fuel distribution, or retail operations
3. Experience supporting month-end close in a fast-paced operating environment
4. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software platforms such as QuickBooks or similar ERP/accounting systems
5. Experience with multi-entity accounting and consolidated reporting environments is a plus
6. Strong understanding of general accounting principles, reconciliations, internal controls, and financial reporting
7. Ability to identify process improvement opportunities and help implement scalable accounting procedures and controls
8. Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
9. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset
10. Ability to work independently while supporting a growing and dynamic organization
11. Flexibility to occasionally support critical deadlines, month-end close activities, and accounting clean-up initiatives as needed
Pay: $55,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
