Staff Accountant
Opportunity Austin — Austin, TX

Position Summary
Opportunity Austin (OA) is one of the nation’s leading economic development organizations, dedicated to advancing prosperity across the five-county Greater Austin region. We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Staff Accountant to join our collaborative finance team.

This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys owning core accounting functions, improving processes, and contributing to accurate and timely financial reporting. The successful candidate will have experience managing day-to-day accounting operations, supporting month-end close, processing payroll, and maintaining strong internal controls in a fast-paced environment.

This position offers the opportunity to work cross-functionally with leadership and department teams while gaining exposure to a broad range of accounting and finance responsibilities. This position will report directly to the COO.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including:
  • Accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Bank and balance sheet reconciliations
  • General ledger maintenance and journal entries
  • Support the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes by preparing reconciliations, accruals, and adjusting entries.
  • Process multi-state payroll and ensure accurate employee deductions, withholdings, tax payments, and timely payroll reporting.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual payroll tax filings, including EFTPS and state tax payments.
  • Assist with preparation of financial statements, compliance reporting, and audit support documentation.
  • Maintain and reconcile employee benefit records, including:
  • 401(k)
  • FSA
  • PTO accruals
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and expense tracking.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, documentation, and reporting processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • 3–5+ years of accounting or bookkeeping experience, preferably in a full-cycle accounting environment.
  • Strong experience with:
  • Month-end close
  • Journal entries and reconciliations
  • Payroll processing
  • Financial reporting
  • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks required.
  • Experience with Bill.com, Expensify, and/or Paylocity strongly preferred.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and internal accounting controls.
  • Experience supporting audits and compliance reporting is a plus.

FT position (30-35 hours)
In office Monday – Thursday, remote work on Friday as business needs allow.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
