Accounting Clerk

Position Summary

The City of Lowell is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Accounting Clerk to support daily financial operations within the Finance Department. This position plays a key role in maintaining accurate financial records and requires hands-on experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced municipal environment with multiple priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process accounts payable, including invoice review, coding, and payment processing
  • Manage accounts receivable, including invoicing, collections, and receipt posting
  • Perform monthly bank account reconciliations with a high degree of accuracy
  • Assist with general ledger entries and financial reporting
  • Maintain organized and accurate financial records and documentation
  • Respond to inquiries from vendors, departments, and the public in a professional manner
  • Assist with audits and provide supporting documentation as requested
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in accounting or related field preferred
  • At least 2 years of direct experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations (required)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, interruptions, and deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in municipal or government accounting
  • Familiarity with fund accounting principles
  • Experience with ERP or municipal finance systems

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $60,000 – $70,000, depending on qualifications
