Accreditation Manager (Part-Time)

The Arlington County Police Department's (ACPD) Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is hiring an Accreditation Manager to manage the Department’s comprehensive accreditation program with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This Manager works closely with personnel throughout the Department to ensure ongoing compliance with CALEA standards.

The OPR reports directly to the Chief of Police and consists of the Internal Affairs Unit, the Legislative Affairs and Inspectional Services Unit, and the Freedom of Information Act and Civil Process Unit. The activities include conducting and assisting with internal investigations, performing audits, serving as the Department's legislative liaison, managing the accreditation process, fulfilling Freedom of Information Act requests, and other special projects as assigned by the Chief of Police. The OPR also serves as the liaison to the Community Oversight Board and Independent Police Auditor.


Major Job Duties:

  • Reviewing and proposing revisions to Department programs, processes, and written directives to ensure compliance with CALEA standards;
  • Identifying areas of non-compliance, proposing solutions, and implementing approved solutions;
  • Coordinating mock and site-based assessments;
  • Scheduling, conducting, and documenting inspections and audits;
  • Conducting training of staff on the accreditation process and requirements;
  • Providing managers with regular updates about the status of accreditation process;
  • Developing and maintaining relationships throughout the Department to promote effective communication;
  • Representing the Department at accreditation meetings and training functions;
  • Maintaining compliance documentation using the PowerDMS accreditation management software; and
  • Attending VACAP and CALEA conferences as needed.

The ideal candidate is an organized and strategic professional with an understanding of the CALEA accreditation system who can independently determine and implement internal processes to ensure successful accreditation.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration or a closely related field;
  • Considerable experience in accreditation management or management of programs demonstrating compliance with professional standards; and
  • Must possess or complete an Accreditation Manager certification course within 12 months of hire.

Substitution(s): Additional qualifying experience can be substituted for the educational requirement. A Master's degree or higher may be substituted for some of the experience requirement.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Researching and organizing information for analysis;
  • Working in an accreditation or compliance department;
  • Using computerized law enforcement records management systems;
  • Working in a criminal justice or public safety environment; and/or
  • Working with confidential information in a secured environment.

Special Requirements

Background Check/Polygraph: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, candidates receiving consideration will also be required to undergo a pre-employment polygraph examination. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information

Work hours: Part-time, specific work hours may vary and will be determined at the time of hire. The incumbent may be required to work scheduled or unscheduled overtime as necessary. This is an on-site position with approved telework opportunities based on operational needs.
