Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

This position provides education/treatment for patients on the Sexual Predator Program Units, in order to fulfill the mission and vision of Larned State Hospital. The person in this position schedules and instructs education sessions, attends outings and participates in CITP’s. The Activity Therapist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the Sexual Treatment Program ages 18-85+. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his age and specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit and department policy and procedures. The Activity Therapist in this position must also be willing to take Tier II residents into the surrounding communities on Outings and be willing to properly evaluate and chart on their behaviors on the Outings.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide Therapy Services: Plans and implements Therapeutic and Educational Activity Therapy Sessions and to participate in and implement outings, which are trips into the community to help integrate residents back into society.
  • Treatment Team Functions: Attend and participate in Treatment Team meetings as able; Function as a liaison between Psycho-Education staff and Treatment Team to gather and convey information regarding residents response to treatment; and attend Comprehensive Integrated Treatment Plan meetings with residents that assist the residents in their progress towards meeting their treatment goals. Attend in-service training that is relevant to current job assignment; Review resources for new ideas for use in Psycho-Therapy sessions; and Maintain credentials and licenses as required by job description. (First Aid, AED and CPR; CERT).
  • Documentation: Write progress notes for assigned caseload per policy; Enter information into Plexus for all residents assigned to therapy sessions after each session; Complete Plexus CPR-297: Activity Therapy Assessment-SSP; Write progress note on resident after assessment is completed; Completes resident treatment schedule in Plexus and write monthly annual reports on designated residents. Planning and Preparation for Sessions: Plan Psycho-Education Therapy sessions designed to meet the needs of the residents; and Gather and obtain needed materials for therapy sessions.
  • Maintenance – Equipment and Facilities: Implement care and maintenance of equipment and supplies as needed; Notify supervisor of need for additional assistance in maintenance or repair of equipment; and Assist with the annual department maintenance and repair of equipment.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of experience in therapeutic recreation, horticulture therapy or one of the creative arts or therapy disciplines such as art, dance/movement or music therapy. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
  • The candidate must possess the ability to lead education courses. The candidate must be able to communicate and work as a team. The candidate must have proficient computer skills.
  • The candidate must also be able to obtain CPR/First Aid and AED Red Cross certifications within one month of employment.
  • CPI Certification within 60 days of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in but not limited to communications, education, or criminal justice.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
