Summary:
Penn Medicine is dedicated to our tripartite mission of providing the highest level of care to patients, conducting innovative research, and educating future leaders in the field of medicine. Today at Penn Medicine, someone will make a breakthrough. Someone will heal a heart, deliver hopeful news, and give comfort and reassurance. Our employees shape our future each day. Are you living your life’s work?
Penn Medicine has an exciting opportunity for Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants to join the Cardiology Advanced Practice (CAP-Service) team. The CAP-Service APP team currently has 2 service arms – advanced heart failure (CAP-HF) and interventional cardiology (CAP-I) – with a planned expansion to a 3rd arm focused on general cardiology. The CAP-Interventional Cardiology (CAP-I) arm cares for patients with advanced structural heart disease requiring interventional-based procedures (such as TAVRs, TMVRs, TTVRs, etc.) and ischemic heart disease requiring complex cath lab-based interventions.
CAP-Interventional Cardiology APPs are also cross-trained to work with the advanced heart failure (CAP-HF) arm of the CAP-Service, whose responsibilities include caring for patients with advanced cardiovascular diseases such as advanced heart failure due to various types of cardiomyopathies, patients requiring mechanical circulatory support (i.e., Ventricular Assist Devices/VAD & Impella 5.5), pulmonary hypertension, heart transplant recipients, and complications associated with heart transplantation. The CAP-Service team primarily cares for patients in the cardiac progressive care unit (PCU), which includes patients requiring pulmonary artery catheter placement and monitoring for hemodynamic-guided therapies, and temporary mechanical circulatory support such as Impella for patients listed and awaiting heart transplantation.
This is a high-paced inpatient service where the Advanced Practice Provider provides comprehensive care including: admissions, daily clinical care and tasks, and discharge planning. The Advanced Practice Provider is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team and will work with highly specialized cardiologists who highly value the Advanced Practice Provider role and the autonomy of Advanced Practice Providers.
This position will require a high level of independence but is well supported with collaborative practice models. The high-impact clinical setting is dynamic, fast paced, and high pressure. Good organizational skills and a strong knowledge of pathophysiology and pharmacology are essential. In this role there will be tremendous professional growth potential and the opportunity to participate in Penn Medicine’s tripartite mission of clinical care, research, and education.
All Advanced Practice Providers will function under the guidelines as designed by the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff guidelines and are credentialed through that body. The Advanced Practice Provider hired by the Department of Advanced Practice will be held accountable through a formal job description, through the delineation of privileges, and through their agreement with their collaborating/supervising physician who has initiated a Collaborative Practice Agreement. All clinical work hours and associated requirements will be defined and managed under the direction of the collaborating physician/division designee, and within the Human Resource guidelines.
