Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

  • The Assistant District Attorney who supervises the General Trial Unit will be responsible for overseeing prosecution of all general trial cases.

  • It should be noted that many of the cases in the unit are assigned to the newest members of the office.

  • In light of that, the supervisor of this unit must take extra care to ensure staff are complying with the unit and office protocols.

  • The Supervisor will also be responsible for creating and implementing a hands-on training program aimed at further developing trial advocacy skills for those completing the intial introductory 6 months training program.

  • The Supervisor will also maintain an active caseload including homicides and complex, violent felonies.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • This position reports directly to the First Assistant District Attorney with oversight from District Attorney.

  • This position supervises those who are in the unit and oversees the prosecution of general crime cases.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Supervise General Trial Unit personnel and oversees cases to include tactical advice, plea negotiation advice and plea approvals.

  • Create and implement a hands-on training program aimed at further developing trial advocacy skills for those completing the initial introductory six months' training program.

  • Responsible for personal caseload including homicide and complex, violent felonies.

  • Provide local trainings for municipal and PSP law enforcement agencies on legal updates. Recommend appropriate procedures for the District Attorney’s consideration for local implementation.

  • Become certified to teach annual trainings to officers for Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission

  • Actively assist the Chief of Appeals and Legal Services with the management and oversight of the office Intern Program.

OTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIES

  • Represent the office in any court calendar proceedings.

  • Handle questions from and advise police officers and less experienced prosecutors on cases and law.

  • Respond to crime scenes to assist investigations as needed.

  • Act as Duty DA to be on call for the office on a rotating basis.

  • Provide trainings to police when requested by the DA.

  • Perform other duties as assigned .

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of four years as a practicing attorney with a workload devoted exclusively or primarily to the practice of criminal law as either a prosecutor or defense counsel or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skill and ability to perform the job.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • This ADA who holds this position must be an expert in PA criminal prosecutions; must be able to provide effective training to newly appointed ADAS and law enforcement personnel on legal issues.

  • Must be able to direct a major criminal investigation and possess the ability to communicate effectively with police, opposing counsel, judges, court-related personnel and victims.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/CLEARANCES

  • License to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under the rules and regulations of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania; If meeting the criteria for "driver" designation under the Lancaster County Transportation Policy, then compliance with "Authorized Driver Guidelines" under same Policy; PA State Criminal history check.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is primarily sedentary in nature; no special demands are required.

  • Must be able to work extended hours when in a trial and/or on a major investigation as needed.
