Adaptive Aquatics Swim Instructor

Adaptive Aquatics Swim Instructor

Part-Time In-Person Starting ASAP

Pay: $17.00/ hour

Location: Metro Atlanta Area

Hours: Part-time

What You’ll Actually Be Doing

Love the pool? Want a job that actually matters? As a SwemSchool Adaptive Aquatics Instructor, you’ll be teaching swim lessons one-on-one (and sometimes in small groups) to kids and adults who have physical, developmental, or sensory needs. Every lesson is different, and every swimmer is unique, and you’ll get to be the person who helps them conquer the water.

Here’s a breakdown of what a typical week looks like:

  • Teach 30-minute swim lessons tailored to each swimmer’s goals and abilities
  • Use visual supports, positive reinforcement, and hands-on techniques to make learning fun and effective
  • Communicate with parents/guardians before and after lessons to share updates
  • Log lesson notes and progress in iClassPro (our scheduling software is easy to learn!)
  • Deliver a formal mid-enrollment progress update at Lesson 3 of each 6-lesson block
  • Attend instructor training sessions and ongoing professional development
  • Work with your team lead (Aquatics Supervisor) on swimmer assessments and placement

Why You’ll Love This Job

  • Make a real difference, because you’re not just teaching swimming, you’re building confidence and life skills
  • Flexible hours that work around your school schedule
  • Paid training in adaptive teaching methods: skills that look great on any resume or college application
  • Small class sizes = less chaos, more connection
  • Supportive team environment with experienced supervisors who actually help you grow
  • Be part of an inclusive community that celebrates every win, big or small

What We’re Looking For

Must-Haves

  • Strong swimming ability (you should be comfortable and confident in the water)
  • Current lifeguard certification OR ability to obtain one before starting (we can help!)
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude
  • Good communication skills with both kids and adults
  • Reliability: your swimmers and their families count on you showing up

Nice-to-Haves (But Not Required!)

  • Experience working with kids or adults with disabilities (babysitting, volunteering, camp counselor, etc.)
  • Swim instructor certification (WSI or similar)
  • Knowledge of AAC devices or alternative communication methods
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to get it)
  • Any coursework or interest in special education, occupational therapy, or child development

A Little About the Program

SwemSchool’s Adaptive Aquatics Program is built around one big idea: every swimmer deserves a chance to succeed. We work with swimmers who:

  • Have physical, developmental, or intellectual disabilities
  • Experience sensory processing challenges or anxiety around water
  • Use AAC devices or other alternative communication methods
  • Simply need more time, support, or a different approach than traditional lessons

As an instructor, you’ll be trained to meet each swimmer where they are, and not where the textbook says they should be. Our program runs in 6-lesson enrollment blocks, and you’ll keep the same swimmer(s) for the whole block to build real trust and momentum.

How the Hiring Process Works

We want to make sure this is the right fit for you AND for our swimmers, so here’s what to expect:

  • Step 1: Submit your application (résumé + a quick note about why you’re interested)
  • Step 2: On-site interview and In-water skills check. Nothing scary, just want to see you in the pool
  • Step 3: Offer + paid onboarding training
  • Step 4: Dive in! you’re an instructor!

SwemSchool is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
