Community Director

Community Directors work in close collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Community Living and the Assistant Directors. The Community Director supervises student Resident Advisors (RA) and is responsible for student staff supervision, student staff training, administrative work, community development, student accountability, facility management, conflict management and supplemental work with various assigned areas. Community Directors are required to live in campus housing as determined by the College.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Directly supervise Resident Advisors including planning weekly staff meetings, regular one-on-one meetings, job performance evaluations, staff recognition, and training on master key responsibilities, usage, and expectations.
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of student resident advisors including on-going crisis management and programming training, the coordination of Fall, Mid-Year, and Spring training for assigned area; and attend all resident advisor trainings including but not limited to Resident Advisor and Community Director training.
  • Coordinate resident check-in and check-out procedures for assigned area, and student room assignments throughout the year.
  • Serve as communication link between the Office of Community Living, the site managers and the residents and staff members of an assigned area.
  • Assist in the planning, execution, and tracking of area programming initiatives
  • Maintain event planning budget, represent the Office of Community Living at College events and hold regular office hours.
  • Develop and implement a community development plan and program model through the assessment of needs of residents in assigned areas.
  • Direct staff in creating inclusive communities that are socially just, safe and welcoming.
  • Implement community development initiatives, such as roommate agreements.
  • Serve as a resource and referral agent for students’ social, academic, and identity needs.
  • Assist with the facilitation of roommate mediations and the addressing of student conduct concerns.
  • Create an open and consistent working relationship with site management as well as other campus partners such as housekeeping and maintenance staff to ensure assigned facilities are well maintained.
  • Develop and implement assessment procedures for identifying facility needs of residents.
  • Conduct regular inspection of residential facilities and assist with reporting any facilities and safety concerns with the Facilities Maintenance office and Campus Safety office respectively.
  • Organize, track, and prepare keys for residential areas of oversight in preparation for fall and spring residential move-in and move-out periods.
  • Respond to student or facility emergencies and provide guidance in crisis situations through on-call responsibilities and daily operations implementing emergency facility management procedures when necessary.
  • Responsible for interpreting and upholding College policy pertaining to Student Accountability policies and assisting staff and resident advisors with confrontation of students violating policies.
  • Contributes to the success of the department by performing all other duties as needed to drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the College.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to attend all scheduled trainings and closings/openings.
  • Preferred previous RA/Student Life/Housing experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, bend and lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Frequently required to move across campus with ease including during inclement weather.
  • Required to be on-call and responsive within an established time expectation.
