The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

This position reports to the Deputy Warden at a multi-custody male correctional facility and operates in a high volume, fast pace environment. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Scheduling needed appointments, filing all related work, answering the telephone and making photocopies.

2. Assisting in personnel roles and performing other duties as assigned by management staff.

3. Maintaining files/records according to departmental policy to allow quick, easy access and retrieval of information.

4. Composing memos/letters with limited instructions from supervisor and proofreading documents for spelling/punctuation/grammar.

5. Inputting and comprehending computer-generated data and reviewing completed tasks to ensure accuracy/integrity of information.

6. Working under stressful conditions and meeting daily/monthly deadlines, receiving/processing sectional mail, and maintaining confidentiality.

7. Working well independently as well as in very close proximity to offenders and other correctional staff.



(Salary Range: $31,200 - $51,249)

Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the " Minimum Education and Experience " listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) listed here in this section are now to be used as " Management Preferences " and to be used to screen for the MOST QUALIFIED pool of applicants.

Management Preferences

  • Documented composition and communication skills (written and oral).

  • Documented working knowledge of word processing or spreadsheet programs.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

The salary grade for this position is NC02 . State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison :

Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers.


While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience
