LIBRARIAN - ADULT SERVICES

An employee in this class performs professional library work, applying advanced principles of library and information science to meet the needs of a diverse community. While the Library provides orientation on specific local policies and proprietary software, the successful candidate must possess a strong foundational mastery of library technology and modern information systems.
The Librarian is an energetic, self-starting professional who manages complex responsibilities with minimal supervision. This role requires a high degree of accountability, sophisticated problem-solving skills, and the ability to maintain unwavering courtesy and discretion when interacting with the public and colleagues.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs supervisory and professional librarian work in a specialized service area of the Caldwell County Public Library (for example: Youth Services, Adult Services, Technical Services, Branch Services, etc.). Note: Librarians are expected to also demonstrate proficiency in all of the Essential Duties and Tasks enumerated in the Library Associate Job Description relating to their service area.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is a trained professional specialist in their assigned service area, who acts as the Supervisory Librarian. They provide oversight of their service area, supervising the full-time and part-time para-professional staff assigned to their area, and providing customer, reference, and other services. Librarians assist the Director in system-wide planning and decision-making, and the implementation of system-wide initiatives.

Work includes oversight and management of all aspects of library service in the assigned area; supervising staff; customer and reference services; assisting the public with specialized information needs; collection development and maintenance, including analyzing and evaluating collections, weeding and making decisions on new purchases; planning and oversight of programs; advising, planning and assisting in activities and special events; organizing program materials; forming partnerships and representing the Library in the community; compiling data and records; managing resources, supplies, and budgets.

Work requires professional judgment and initiative as well as tact and diplomacy in relating to staff and the general public. Work is performed independently under the supervision of the Library Director and is evaluated through conferences, reports, quality and quantity of services delivered, and observation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS

  • Oversees services of a major service area within the library under the oversight of the Library Director; supervises full-time and part-time staff; orients and trains staff; prepares staff schedules; coaches and counsels staff; prepares performance evaluations of assigned staff; addresses personnel issues; initiates progressive discipline actions.
  • Determines work priorities; compiles data, generates reports and maintains records on service area activities; prepares statistical reports of service area’s activities.
  • Oversees and ensures the operational maintenance of the physical plant, equipment, supplies, electronics, furnishings and appurtenances of the assigned service area; ensures a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Oversees and informs all aspects of reference and customer service in the service area; provides specialized assistance and instruction in reader’s advisory, research and the location and retrieval of information.
  • Oversees all programming, promotions, presentations, and outreach activities within the service area.
  • Manages collection development for assigned area; keeps current on collections by reading and reviewing books and materials received; maintains knowledge of books and materials and technical advances in the library field; manages the collection budget for the service area; selects appropriate books and materials for purchase through the use of reviews, statistics and demographic information while evaluating and analyzing collections and collection development decisions to ensure factors such as accuracy, factualness, authority, currency, quality, balance, diversity and patron interest are reflected in the collection.
  • Prepares and conducts presentations about the library for various groups; plans presentations, programs and outreach events; compiles publicity materials; provides promotional information for social media.

RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION GUIDELINES
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILTIES
  • Considerable knowledge of the theories and operational practices of a public library and specific best practices of library science in the assigned service and collection development areas.
  • Considerable knowledge of Caldwell County Public Library procedures, methods, materials and practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of reference and reader’s advisory strategies.
  • Thorough knowledge of the books, materials and resources in the assigned service area.
  • Thorough knowledge of the use of electronic information systems, including the internet, databases, and downloadable media.
  • Knowledge of accepted principles of management and leadership as applied to a public library environment.
  • Knowledge of the reference, circulation and cataloging operations of the library’s proprietary Integrated Library System software.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal classification system of library organization.
  • Knowledge of the library’s genres, shelving designations and locations.
  • Knowledge of books, reference materials, periodicals, audio-visual and other materials available for customer use.
  • Knowledge of the publishing trends and available materials for the assigned collection development area.
  • Skill working with computers using Microsoft Office, printers/copiers, scanners, and other equipment needed for performance of the position’s duties.
  • Skill in presentations and in program-related public contact.
  • Ability to manage and optimize the physical space and equipment of the assigned service area.
  • Ability to manage and lead assigned staff.
  • Ability to supervise the work of assigned staff, including training and performance evaluations.
  • Ability to develop, council, and correct staff in a tactful and constructive manner designed to help staff productivity, growth and success.
  • Ability to develop and administer projects, resolve problems, work effectively with other groups, agencies and individuals.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate assigned area of collections and make decisions on the acquisition and weeding of collections.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate successful programs and services for assigned populations.
  • Ability to assess the needs of and assist patrons of all ages and demographic groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employers, employees, volunteers, officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of resources to provide information to and acquire materials for patrons.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing.
  • Must be able to perform medium work, exerting up to 15 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer, for extensive reading, for visual inspection of books and materials at distances or close to the eyes.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited Library Science library program and 2 years of library-related experience, including some experience in the particular area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited Library Science program.
  • North Carolina Public Library certification
  • A valid North Carolina’s Driver’s license may be required for some service areas.
