Advanced Practice Provider (APP/LCSW/LPC)– NICU/PICU

The Department of Pediatrics seeks a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) to join their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) interdisciplinary teams to provide specialized mental health care to children, parents/families, and care partners facing trauma, crisis, and high-stress medical situations. This LCSW/LPC will provide therapy services to address anxiety, stress, grief and loss, end-of-life care, ethical dilemmas, trauma, and other mental health needs associated with a child’s ICU stay.

Hybrid model with inpatient warm handoffs, and virtual and ambulatory.

Therapy visits. Shift: M-F.

  • At least two years of post-licensure clinical experience in high-acuity areas (i.e., ICU, ED, or crisis centers)
  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Demonstrated comfort with therapeutic interventions and skills appropriate for helping families and patients navigate medical crises and complex conditions, chronic illness, traumatic injury, grief and loss


Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.

1) Administration
  • Documents patient care in accordance with UVA University Medical Center policies and regulatory requirements
  • Facilitates staff development, in-service training, and educational opportunities to support professional growth and evidence-based practice

2) Professional
  • Participates in treatment planning, care coordination, and advocates for patient preferences within the interdisciplinary team

3) Clinical
  • Completes bio-psychosocial assessments, diagnosis, and development of culturally competent individualized treatment plans for patients
  • Provides specialized mental health support to address the unique presenting concerns of patients, families, and care partners within these Intensive Care Units


  • Addresses trauma, anxiety, and depression, facilitates parent-infant bonding, provides crisis intervention, and assists with navigating severe illness, grief and loss, or developmental challenges

4) Leadership
  • Provides clinical supervision, and trains new staff, students, and interns as assigned
  • Assists with treatment program development

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master’s degree in Social Work from a CSWE accredited social work program required

Experience: 3 years’ experience post master’s required.

Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia (LCSW) or applicants with an active license from another state must obtain Virginia LCSW within 18 months of hire date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires sitting for prolonged periods, standing/traveling or use of assistive and climbing (stairs, steps). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail, hear, speak, see, distinguish colors, read, ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The starting base rate for this role is $61,443.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
