The Advanced Practice Provider (APP); PRN functions as an expert within a defined scope of practice and performs selected tasks and services in collaboration with Cardiothoracic Surgeons. This position practices under the supervision of the supervising physician to plan, direct, and provide patient care for cardiothoracic patients. The APP offers first assist in the operating room and provides direct primary care to patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings on an as-needed (PRN) basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborates with Cardiothoracic Surgeons in overseeing and coordinating the multidisciplinary care delivered to all cardiothoracic patients, inpatient and outpatient, to optimize quality patient care.
Provides operating room coverage including first assist, endoscopic vein harvest, and radial artery harvest.
Performs ICU rounding and coverage.
Performs floor rounding, consults, and discharges.
Provides office/clinic coverage for preoperative consults and postoperative follow-ups.
Provides primary care to all cardiothoracic patients including assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, and development of treatment plan.
Notifies the attending physician as outlined in the Collaborative Practice Agreement.
Monitors guidelines for the management of patients and ensures that services are delivered in compliance with the guidelines established by JPS Health Network and Acclaim Physician Group.
Participates in the cardiothoracic call schedule as defined by the department, on an as-needed (PRN) basis.
Assists in the operating room for elective, urgent, and emergent adult cardiac surgery (CABG, valve replacement, aortic dissection) and adult thoracic surgery (robotic lung surgery, lobectomy, decortication) as instructed.
Attends quality improvement and team meetings as instructed.
Maintains own licensing and credentialing to practice, including all required certifications.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education & Training:
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program OR Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) with RNFA certification.
2+ years of cardiothoracic surgery OR experience as an advanced practice provider with first assist in the OR.
Licensure & Certification:
Current unrestricted licensure to practice as required by the State of Texas.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; may obtain within 60 days of hire and maintained current throughout employment.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification; may obtain within 60 days of hire and maintained current throughout employment.
Completion of unit-specific competency-based orientation program within 90 days of hire.
Experience:
5+ years of cardiothoracic surgery OR experience as an advanced practice provider with first assist in the OR preferred.
Proficiency in or willingness to develop skills in intra-aortic balloon pump insertion/removal, pacer management/pacing wire removal, endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting, Swan-Ganz insertion and removal, radial artery harvest (endoscopic or open), and chest tube placement preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
