Agronomy Foreman

The Agronomy Foreman oversees the daily operations of the agronomy team, ensuring that all turf maintenance and landscape management activities are conducted to the highest standards. This role involves supervising a team of groundskeepers, coordinating maintenance schedules, and implementing agronomic practices to enhance the health and appearance of the golf course. The Agronomy Foreman is a key player in executing the golf course's maintenance strategy and ensuring a world-class experience for club members and guests.

JOB OVERVIEW - PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The primary purpose of the Agronomy Foreman is to manage and coordinate the activities of the agronomy team, ensuring the effective maintenance and improvement of the golf course. This role involves overseeing daily operations, including mowing, fertilisation, irrigation, pest control, and landscape management. The Agronomy Foreman supports the Agronomy Director in implementing agronomic plans, managing resources, and maintaining high-quality course conditions. This position is crucial for delivering exceptional playing conditions and aesthetic appeal on the golf course

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Team Supervision and Management
  • Supervise and lead a team of groundskeepers and agronomy staff, providing direction, training, and support to ensure high performance and adherence to maintenance standards.
  • Assign daily tasks and responsibilities, ensuring that work is completed efficiently and to the required quality.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and implement disciplinary actions as needed to maintain a motivated and effective team.
Maintenance and Operations
  • Oversee and coordinate daily turf maintenance activities, including mowing, edging, fertilisation, aeration, and irrigation, ensuring that all tasks are performed according to agronomic best practices and schedules.
  • Monitor and manage irrigation systems, including adjustments and repairs, to maintain optimal turf health and water efficiency.
  • Implement and supervise pest and disease control programs, including the application of pesticides and herbicides, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and environmental guidelines.
Resource and Equipment Management
  • Manage the use and maintenance of equipment and tools, ensuring that all machinery is in good working condition and properly maintained.
  • Coordinate with the Head Mechanic to schedule equipment repairs and service, minimising downtime and ensuring efficient operations.
  • Monitor inventory levels of supplies and materials, including fertilisers, chemicals, and other resources, and coordinate with suppliers to manage orders and deliveries.
Quality Control and Reporting
  • Conduct regular inspections of the golf course to assess turf health, identify issues, and ensure that maintenance activities meet quality standards.
  • Report on the condition of the course, including any issues or improvements needed, to the Head Golf Course Superintendant.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including treatments, schedules, and any issues encountered, to support decision-making and track progress.
Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure that all agronomy activities are conducted in compliance with safety regulations, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of chemicals.
  • Implement and enforce safety procedures and protocols to protect staff, members, and the environment.
  • Stay informed about and comply with all relevant regulations and best practices related to turf management, chemical application, and environmental stewardship.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Collaborate with the Head Golf Course Superintendant and other department heads to develop and implement maintenance plans and schedules that align with the overall goals of the golf course.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, providing clear instructions, guidance, and support to ensure the successful completion of tasks.
  • Foster a positive work environment, encouraging teamwork, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence.
Project and Event Support
  • Assist with special projects, such as course renovations, tournament preparations, and seasonal activities, providing leadership and coordination as needed.
  • Support event-related activities by ensuring that the course is prepared to meet the specific requirements and expectations of special events and member activities.
ROLE QUALIFICATIONS Experience
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in turf management or grounds maintenance, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Experience working on high-end golf courses or in similar upscale environments is preferred.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in turf management practices, including mowing, fertilisation, irrigation, and pest control.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance, including understanding of machinery and tools used in golf course maintenance.
  • Familiarity with agronomy software and record-keeping systems is a plus.
Soft Skills
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact professionally with staff, members, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to address maintenance issues and make decisions that impact course conditions.
