The Department of Environmental Quality is looking to fill an Air Monitoring Scientist (Environmental Scientist III) position in the Division of Air Quality. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.
Key Responsibilities
-
Operate, calibrate, and perform complex repairs on ambient air monitoring equipment to ensure continuous data collection and minimal downtime.

Utilize advanced analytical equipment to measure and evaluate air pollutants in accordance with established scientific protocols.

Execute all field and laboratory activities in strict accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and state/federal environmental regulations.

Implement rigorous quality control requirements to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and legal defensibility of environmental data.

Maintain meticulous Chain of Custody documentation for all samples from initial collection through laboratory analysis and final disposal.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
-
Experience working in and around analytical equipment and instruments.
- Experience ensuring quality control measures are followed.
-
Experience operating, troubleshooting and repairing scientific instrumentation and air monitoring equipment i.e., gas chromatography instruments, particulate samplers, gaseous analyzers for NOx, ozone, CO, SO2 and VOC’s.

Experience conducting laboratory analysis of samples including prepping and weighing filter material.

Ability and experience working independently, including working at off-campus locations.

Ability to operate, troubleshoot and repair complex equipment including air monitoring equipment.

Ability to work effectively within a team environment and integrate seamlessly with existing staff.

Exceptional attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in all work products.

Strong time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Bachelor degree or higher in a science related field including computer science.
-
An understanding of the principles related to pollution monitoring, research methods and data collection protocols.

Completion of the APTI 470 course, or equivalent.

Certifications from API Teledyne or Thermo Scientific related to instrument training.
Other Requirements:
-
Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel throughout the state as required.

Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.

Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
Job Series
The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist I with a salary range of $25.27 - $37.95 per hour, an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $29.73 - $44.66 per hour, or an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $34.98 - $52.56 per hour.
