Aircraft Mechanic Helper (Disassembly) - Day Shift

The purpose of this position is to provide aircraft maintenance services to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) for the Short-Range Recovery (SRR) Division. To ensure that aircraft remain in top condition, ALC currently completes program depot maintenance (PDM) (described as a total overhaul of an airframe) every four (4) years on each of the USCG’s aircraft. During this time, the aircraft are completely disassembled, cleaned, repaired, repainted and built back up before returning to the fleet. ALC may also complete overhauls and repairs for various other Government aircraft and components. In support of the USCG’s PDM program, the USCG requires Aircraft Maintenance Services (AMS) to perform the disassembly, maintenance, repair, inspections, evaluations of sheet metal and composite structures, electrical and electrical components, avionics and avionics components, dynamic components, landing gear and flight controls, along with the routing and verification of components, equipment and supplies on the SRR MH-65 aircraft.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the position will include but not limited to:


  • Conducting the Disassembly Phase of the PDM process. This includes complete disassembly of the aircraft and preparation for blast, within six (6) workdays of receipt of the aircraft.
  • Routing of required parts will be accomplished throughout the Disassembly Phase and completed no later than nine (9) workdays of receipt of aircraft. When all aspects of the Disassembly Phase have been completed, and prior of receipt of another aircraft, this position will perform other aircraft mechanical duties for the SRR Product Line and/or throughout Aviation Logistics Center (ALC).
  • Assist in the disassembly of aircraft or major components for overhaul or modification.
  • Observe work processes and after appropriate instruction, select tools and supplies for proper usage to assist in removal of major components of aircraft structure or systems such as control surfaces, fairings, access panels, doors, hatches, landing gear assemblies, engines, activator units, tubing, electrical wiring, and control cables.
  • Read blueprints and sketches to understand the functions of the parts or units and discusses with lead personnel how to plan and carry out work e.g., component removal, finding faulty parts or units; and how to comply with safety practices including positive tool control.
  • Perform routine duties such as furnishing materials, tools and supplies to mechanic lifting and holding materials in place during operation; cleaning work areas and machines, tools and equipment.
  • Clean aircraft, interior and exterior parts and assemblies with solvents or other cleaning solutions.
  • May assist flight line mechanic in servicing and repairing aircraft prior to flight.
  • May work as part of a team, under the direction of higher-grade employees, to accomplish larger and more complex operations such as jacking and leveling aircraft, installing and adjusting engines, landing gear assemblies, instrument panels, flight control systems, and movement of aircraft.
  • Perform other Aircraft Mechanic Helper duties as required.
Requirements:
  • Minimum of one (1) year aircraft related mechanical experience.
  • Ability to operate power and/or hand tools and equipment such as pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, torque wrenches, micrometers, go-no-go gauges, multi-meters, feeler gauges and tension meters.
  • Proper use of tools and equipment and the duties performed require continual care and attention to both to avoid accidents and to finish the work properly. Prior job experience or on-the-job training is normally required to gain this ability.
  • Work assignments, not detailed in the workbook or in Maintenance Procedure Cards, require remembering directions and sequences.
  • With appropriate training and experience, the employee must develop the ability to read, understand and apply trade or administrative guides such as technical manuals, technical orders, blueprints, sketches, and other related documentation.
  • Possess knowledge, skill, and ability to follow appropriate safety procedures common to the trade.
  • In addition, knowledge of specific hazardous materials and hazardous wastes procedures is required including fitting and usage of protective gear and completion of related training.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.
  • Shall be citizens of the U.S.
  • Possess computer skills to include a basic knowledge sufficient to complete internet searches and prepare/edit documents utilizing word processing or spreadsheet applications.
  • Shall be capable of using cumbersome Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) operations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Shall be capable of performing tasks that frequently require lifting, reaching, bending, walking, pulling, sitting, standing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, and stretching for prolonged periods of time.
  • Shall be capable of performing tasks in cramped, awkward, and strained positions and/or climbing up and down ladders, work platforms, scaffolding, and aircraft structures.
  • Shall be capable of carrying items up to 40 pounds and on heavier items shall seek assistance of other workers or weightlifting devices.

Full-time Day Shift

Pay Rate: $28.73/hr.

Location: 1664 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909
