Airport Control Center Agent

Major Functions

The Airport Control Center Agent is an integral part of the Airport’s operations/security team and essential to the efficient day-to-day support of the Airport’s operation/security activity. The Airport Control Center Agent is a multi-functional position that encompasses functional areas (Airport Operations and Airport Security)


Illustrative Duties

(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)


  • Monitors and inspects the airport’s perimeter fence and gates for any damage, gaps in the gates and/or fence, gaps from bottom to ground and ensures the gates are locked and secured.
  • As needed will perform inspections of airside, landside, and terminal buildings to ensure compliance with the Airport Security Program (ASP) and federal regulations.
  • Maintains a positive friendly working relationship with airport operations team, tenants, and guests while implementing the Airport's Security Program (ASP).
  • Monitors airport security video surveillance, fire protection, radio communications systems, and alarm systems to ensure security system is operational; monitors security system activities for discrepancies, dispatching appropriate staff as required.
  • Reports fires, acts of vandalism, theft, illegal entry, or any other unauthorized, irregular or suspicious activity immediately.
  • Receives and directs emergency and non-emergency calls efficiently.
  • Dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls to appropriate personnel and maintains the status of incidents and record of dispatched service.
  • Assists with or responds to and coordinates emergency response agencies, personnel, and equipment to respond to airport and aircraft emergencies, accidents, alerts and/or airport security incidents.
  • Communicates and coordinates information or instructions clearly and effectively with law enforcement, emergency responders, and airport tenants via two-way radios, telephone, and in-person briefings.
  • May be required to work overtime shifts based on operational needs.
  • Monitors for activities that violate airport safety and security regulations, could result in injury, or cause damage to airport property.
  • Provides airport tenants and users with operational conditions, information, directions, and assistance through multi-modes of communication and computer systems to ensure safe, secure, and expeditious movement of the traveling public.
  • Monitors airport operational conditions and status of automated systems; performs routine tests to ensure appropriate notifications and follow-up actions.
  • Notifies airport staff of important operational matters by way of telephone, radio, email, paging systems, in person or other digital notification systems.
  • Coordinates and dispatches appropriate staff regarding operational, maintenance, safety and security related issues; logs and reports complaints (i.e., noise, shuttle, etc.) to staff for appropriate follow-up.
  • Initiates and coordinates airport response and notification of essential local, state, and federal agencies to respond to emergencies in support of the “Unified Incident Command” structure; assists with operation of the Airport Operations Center (AOC) as required.
  • Monitors Communication Center equipment, and reports equipment problems; records all significant events disseminated to and/or from the Communications Center in computerized daily logs.
  • May be trained as an Airport Operations Agent to have the awareness and proficiency required to perform job duties.
  • Perform Customer Services tasks including, but not limited to answering telephones, paging passengers over the airport paging system, providing directions to the public, assisting with lost and found when required.
  • Provides for the collection and dissemination of airport condition information to air carriers, tenants, and interested parties via the Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) system, telephone and digital products. Must maintain any necessary training and qualifications to legally issue NOTAMs.
  • When needed, will assist in providing escorts for tours, events, and equipment within the Security Identification Area (SIDA), Sterile Areas and Air Operating Areas (AOA).
  • Operates County vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs duties as a trusted agent as needed.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:


  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
  • One (1) year of experience working in airport security or operations or a communications center.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Must obtain or possess a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of hire and maintain thereafter.
  • Must obtain Airport Perimeter Service Road/Non-Movement Area driver certification/endorsement within ten (10) days of initial performance of duties and maintain thereafter.
  • Must obtain Airport Airfield Ground Vehicle Operator driver certification/endorsement within six (6) months of initial performance of duties and maintain thereafter. (May be extended by Airport Management as needed.)
  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge and maintain thereafter.
  • Must obtain the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Airport Certified Employee (ACE) Communications Center Operations within 24 months of initial hire.

NOTE: Candidates selected for interviews will be required to undergo and pass the following:
  • Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) with no disqualifying offenses.
  • Computer Skills test (type 15-20 words per minute).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of and the ability to enforce airport security regulations and operating procedures in an impartial manner as outlined in 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) part 139 and 49 CFR 1542.
  • Operational working knowledge of Airport Control/Communication Center.
  • Operational working knowledge of Closed-Circuit Television Systems (CCTV) and audio communication equipment.
  • Skilled in using computers, faxes, office equipment, and related software (MS Office).
  • Skilled in the operation of a multi-line or computerized telephone, and in the operation of digital, audio, or radio communications equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to monitor CCTV cameras for long periods.
  • Ability to accurately assess emergency and non-emergency information, make correct decisions, and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external agencies and with the public.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to make independent judgments based on established policies and safety standards.
  • Ability to work and multi-task in a high stress environment during emergencies and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to tactfully deal with customers and provide customer service.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to operate multiple types of radio and other communication devices.
  • Ability to facilitate training, conduct briefings and provide feedback.
  • Ability to work longer and rotating shifts to provide 24/7 coverage.
  • Ability to key data accurately.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to recognize public safety hazards.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to safely operate vehicles and ground equipment.
  • Ability to be trained as an Airport Operations Agent to have the awareness and proficiency required to perform job duties.

ADA REQUIREMENTS


Mental Demands:
Ability to read and comprehend technical and professional journals, manuals, procedures and instructions: maps, layouts, memos, summaries, reports and evaluations. Ability to speak clearly and concisely, read, write, and comprehend English to relay information to other workers and laymen. Ability to perform basic math and arithmetic. Ability to identify and resolve problems. Ability to analyze data and develop conclusions. Ability to comprehend and use radio procedures and designations.

Physical Demands:Ability to perform essential duties and responsibilities, and meet the minimum requirements. Visual acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception, color acuity) of 20/30 vision standard in each eye; if corrective lenses must be used to satisfy 20/30 vision standard, uncorrected vision should be no worse than 20/100 in each eye to operate motorized and special use vehicles, airfield marking lights, computers, CCTV, and special use identification media. Ability to talk and pass a hearing test with less than or equal to 40 decibels in each ear under the frequencies: 2,000 Hz, 3,000 Hz and 4,000 Hz. Ability to stand, sit, walk and view computer screens/CCTV for prolong periods of time. Ability to work rotating day/night shifts and work up twelve (12) hours shifts. Ability to lift and carry, push, pull, up to 50 pounds unassisted; stand, walk, climb, reach, handle, finger dexterity.

Environmental Demands: Extended periods of inside and outside work. Ability to tolerate periods of inclement weather including high heat and humidity, wind, rain, and cold. May be exposed to chemicals, insects, odors, dust, fumes, noise, and vibration.
