The City of Pittsfield is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Airport Maintenance Technician whose primary responsibilities include the maintenance and upkeep of the airfield, facilities, and equipment, the operation of a variety of light and heavy equipment, and routine manual labor tasks requiring considerable strength and endurance. Activities include but are not limited to: inspections; monitoring and oversight; plowing; mowing; airfield grounds and equipment maintenance; management of wildlife and vegetation; and operation of complex and heavy equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducting airfield inspections for compliance with FAA requirements (i.e., Regulations, Advisory Circulars, Directives, Orders, etc.). Airfield Inspections include, but are not limited to, identifying, preventing, and removing all hazards to aviation (e.g., foreign object debris (FOD), wildlife, and other hazards).
  • Issuing and recording Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), as required.
  • Overseeing daily construction activities to ensure safety of operations areas.
  • Monitoring fueling operations to ensure safety and reporting and cleanup of any spills.
  • Monitoring and managing the physical security of the airport fence and gates.
  • Limiting ingress of wildlife and managing and removing (to the extent practicable) wildlife within the airfield fence.
  • Coordinating the Snow Removal Team in accordance with the plan, as directed by the Airport Manager.
  • Sharing responsibility for wildlife management in accordance with plans and permits.
  • Sharing responsibility for vegetation management in accordance with plans and permits.
  • Sharing responsibility for enforcing airport security requirements and operating rules.
  • The safe and efficient operation of maintenance and construction equipment. This includes heavy (up to and in excess of 40,000 pounds GVW), specialized, and complex motorized equipment requiring significant manipulative skill (e.g., highway plows, pickup trucks, tractors, backhoes, front end loaders, fork lifts, skid steers, generators, and other specialized equipment and associated implements).
  • The safe and efficient operation of landscaping equipment and hand tools (e.g., lawn mowers, string trimmers, brush cutters, chainsaws, pressure washers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, sanders, shovels, rakes, etc.).
  • Light maintenance and daily servicing and upkeep of airport maintenance equipment (e.g., adding fluids, greasing, cleaning, attaching/removing implements, sharpening, replacing wear items, etc.).
  • Light maintenance and upkeep of airport owned facilities.
  • Maintaining airfield equipment (e.g., replacing bulbs, repairing lighting and signage, etc.)
  • Maintaining the airport’s Snow Removal Equipment (SRE) and maintenance facility in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Ordering necessary maintenance supplies, in coordination with airport management.
  • Load and unload assigned vehicle, spread asphalt, dig trenches, erect signs, shovel snow, rake leaves, spread loam, trim brush, mow lawns, and perform any tasks charged to the Department in its daily activities.
  • Perform all other duties and related work as required or as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Two years of acceptable experience (preferably airport experience) operating heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, tree removal equipment, trailers, or other construction and agricultural equipment.
  • Ability to meet Pittsfield Municipal Airport’s FAA standards for conducting day and night airfield inspections, reporting, and NOTAM’s and conducting inspections and reporting on a regular basis.
  • Ability to operate two-way radio communications equipment in an airport operating environment.
  • Working knowledge of motorized construction and agriculture equipment operation, maintenance, accessory tools, capabilities, and limitations and considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in operating equipment in this class.
  • Hunting experience.
  • Electrical experience (electrician's license a plus).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain licenses as described below (e.g., FID/LTC, Driver's License/CDL, Hoisting Licenses, etc.).
  • Valid Massachusetts Firearms Identification (FID) or License to Carry (LTC).
  • Valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license (unless CDL is held).
  • Upon appointment, valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake endorsement.
  • Upon appointment, valid 1A, 1B, 1C, or 1D Hoisting License suitable for applicable equipment use in the Commonwealth (a plus, but not required).
  • Upon appointment, valid 2A, 2B, 2C Excavator License suitable for applicable equipment use in the Commonwealth.
  • Upon appointment, valid 4G Specialty Side Boom Mower License suitable for applicable equipment use in the Commonwealth.
  • Upon appointment, DOT medical and pass DOT drug test.
  • Ability to interact with people on an up-beat and friendly basis regardless of circumstances.
  • Ability to comply with oral and written instructions frequently of a technical nature.

The incumbent works in various dynamic municipal buildings and locations. While performing the duties of the Airport Maintenance Technician, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, subject to all weather conditions and extremes. Incumbent may be required to work at any time during the 24-hour day to respond to weather-related or emergency needs.

Physical ability and agility to climb ladders and enter confined spaces; walk long distance over uneven terrain; lift fifty (50) pounds from ground level to chest height in standing position; work in an aircraft operating environment; and work outdoors in all seasons.


HOURS

Monday – Friday, 40 Hours per week

8am – 4pm


SALARY:

Starting rate $23.97- $25.43 an hour

Annual increases up to $31.28 an hour
