The City of Independence is seeking a dependable, hardworking individual to join the Airport Department as an Airport Part‑Time Laborer. This position supports essential airport operations by assisting with grounds maintenance, mowing, snow removal, and facility upkeep on an as‑needed basis.

FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt

The Role
The Airport Part‑Time Laborer performs routine manual tasks and equipment‑assisted work to maintain airport grounds, runways, taxiways, and facilities. Responsibilities include mowing, landscaping, snow removal, equipment cleaning, and operational support within the aircraft movement area. The ideal candidate is safety‑oriented, dependable, and able to work as needed in varying weather and environmental conditions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate City vehicles to travel to work locations and transport materials and equipment.
  • Use various power tools and equipment for grounds and facility maintenance.
  • Perform snow removal using blades, blowers, buckets, shovels, and related equipment.
  • Operate landscaping equipment including tri‑fold mowers, zero‑turn mowers, and trimmers.
  • Load, unload, and clean tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Report equipment or vehicle issues to the Airport Director.
  • Monitor or operate UNICOM frequency while operating vehicles in aircraft operations areas.
  • Replace burned‑out runway, taxiway, hangar, and facility light bulbs.
  • Perform incidental duties such as marshaling aircraft, assisting with fuel operations, and greeting customers as needed.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Airport Director.

Qualifications & Requirements

Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety practices.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting, bending, and working in extreme weather.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, procedures, and policies.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements and facility‑related regulations.
Licensing
  • Must possess a valid State of Iowa driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, and operate tools/equipment.
  • Ability to work in environments with extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, noise, and moving machinery.
Work Style
  • Safety‑conscious, reliable, adaptable, and able to work with minimal supervision.
Availability
  • On‑call schedule. Hours vary by season (summer and winter). No guaranteed minimum hours.

Work Environment
This role includes both indoor and outdoor work, with significant time spent in variable weather conditions. The position involves exposure to heat, cold, humidity, dust, fumes, noise, and moving mechanical parts.
