DESCRIPTION


Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Analytical Chemist. This position is located at our Materials and Fuels Complex. Our team works a 4x10 schedule every Friday off.

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel development and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.

You will use chemical measurements to determine the identity of chemical materials and the composition of compounds, solutions, and mixtures. This includes the development of methods and techniques for performing chemical analysis as well as the execution of the analytical procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research to improve existing and advance new capabilities and methodologies for reviewing and interpreting data in area(s) of specialty (e.g., nuclear science, gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometric detection, radiochemistry, etc.).

  • Design and participate in experiments to acquire data that will support scientific improvements and evaluate new research concepts supporting area(s) of specialty.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, operations, and other technical resources.

  • Serve as technical liaison with other divisions with regards to analytical capabilities. May interface directly with a variety of laboratory R&D customers requesting analytical services, R&D project principal investigators, and line management.

  • Identify new research opportunities. Work with other staff to develop concepts for new products and services for potential research sponsors, leading to proposal generation, and interfacing with intramural researchers to specify measurement science projects that support their larger goals.

  • Communicate results to internal and external sponsors via written technical reports and oral presentations.

  • Generate reports and provide materials for documentation. Write research proposals to gain new funding for projects from sponsors as appropriate.

  • May develop/recommend changes in program processes and procedures. Ensure that onsite support practices meet the requirements of the quality assurance plan and that quality control (QC) provision requirements are implemented at required frequencies.

  • May prepare radiological samples in hot cells, gloveboxes, or radiological fume hoods.

  • Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements:
  • Level 3: Master of Science degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related field from an accredited institution and 2 years’ experience. PhD and 2 years’ experience.

  • Level 4: Master of Science degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related field from an accredited institution and 6 years’ experience. PhD and 4 years’ experience.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred Experience:

  • Advanced degree in chemistry, physics, or related field from an accredited institution.

Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($95,256 - $ 195,588)/ Level 4 ($114,360 - $234,336). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials..

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.

  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use stairs, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of jobrelated equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required.
