Job Summary

Works under the guidance of a licensed anesthesiologist and other medical professionals in the operating room, including surgeons and registered nurses. Responsible for the inspection of all operating room equipment used by the licensed anesthesiologist/CRNA, including the reporting of any malfunctioning machinery. Anesthesia technologists also have the important duty of accurately calibrating all electronic equipment, as well as sterilizing anesthesia machinery prior to surgery. Responsible for assisting with patient transportation. Responsible for keeping all anesthesia supplies stocked and reordering them when necessary.

Essential Functions

  • Anesthesia Support and Equipment Management
  • Provides support to anesthesia staff with preparation of room and equipment needed for patient care.
  • Assists staff with patient care by positioning and transferring anesthetized patients and supporting limbs during surgical skin preps.
  • Protects patient and personal safety by following department processes, understanding equipment function, and maintaining a sterile environment. When assisting a patient, staff is aware of the sterile boundaries within the operating room when supplies are opened.
  • Assists physician with insertion of invasive monitoring lines as needed.
  • Knowledgeable of asepsis theory and practice, manage workflow to reduce room traffic during procedures.
  • Coordinates patient transportation between operating rooms and other locations.
  • Appropriately handles contaminated equipment and supplies. Cleans anesthesia machines, monitors, and equipment following procedures established by Infection Control.
  • Proactively stocks and maintains all anesthesia supplies and equipment, including Operating rooms, emergency airway carts, and any other anesthesia supply location. Initiates order of supplies to maintain inventory at prescribed par levels.
  • Camera Operation
  • Aseptic Technique: Perform surgical hand scrubs and don sterile gowns and gloves according to established perioperative standards.
  • Laparoscopic Assistance: Under the direction of the lead surgeon, hold and maneuver the laparoscopic camera (laparoscope) to provide a steady, centered view of the internal surgical site. This requires anticipating the surgeon’s movements and keeping the lens clear of moisture or debris.

Requirements

Experience:

  • Preferred: 1–2 years of experience as an Anesthesia Technician
  • Operating room or acute care experience preferred
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Licensure/Certifications

  • Preferred: Certification through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT); not required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
