About the Role

This position is responsible for direct oversight of daily activities provided by anesthesia technologists and respiratory therapists within the operating room and perioperative services. This position will also be responsible for preparing, testing and setting-up anesthetic and respiratory equipment for surgical and PACU use and verifying patient identification and applicable procedures scheduled to be performed. This position will be responsible for staffing and scheduling operating room anesthesia technicians and respiratory therapists within the operating room and perioperative services.


Responsibilities

  • Provides scheduling of anesthesia technicians and respiratory therapists within the operating room and perioperative areas.
  • Provides clinical assistance to the anesthesia physicians prior to, during, and between OR cases.
  • Connects and operates patient care equipment during surgical procedures with appropriate supervision.
  • Sets-up, operates and maintains devices used in the operating room clinical environment.
  • Sets-up, operates and maintains mechanical ventilation for patients transferring from the OR to PACU.
  • Transports patients safely that require airway management and/or mechanical ventilation.
  • Checks and calibrates clinical equipment systems (i.e., anesthesia machines, rapid infusion systems (RIS), infusion pump systems, blood recovery systems, etc.).
  • Performs routine monitoring duties, documentation and modifications to equipment.
  • Responds immediately to OR calls that require assistance with supplies, pharmaceuticals, blood products, forms, equipment or other items required during a surgical procedure.
  • Interacts with clinical anesthesia personnel to determine supply and set-up needs.
  • Communicates regularly with respiratory care practitioners, nurses, physicians to foster continuity of care.
  • Manages the inventory of disposable and reusable anesthesia-related supplies.
  • Able to provide respiratory diagnostic procedures within the pre-op/PAT area.
  • Processes supply orders, maintains records and checks status of orders.
  • Collaborates with OR equipment/supply manager on pending issues with vendors.
  • Maintains the employee workload and case schedule for anesthesia technologists.
  • Assists OR manager with quality control and KPI measures.


Qualifications


Education:

  • Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy or equivalent diploma (NLT 2 curriculum).
  • Certification as a Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT) by the National Board for Respiratory Therapist Care (USA) OR the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapist (CSRT) Preferred.
  • Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • OR Bsc. in Anesthesia.
  • Registered Nurse with specialized training in anesthesia techniques and equipment.
  • Registered Respiratory Technician with specialized training in anesthetic techniques and equipment.

Experience:

  • NLT 2 years of experience as a respiratory therapist Technician is required.
  • OR NLT 2 years of experience working in an active anesthesia department is required.
  • Anesthesia experience preferred but not required.
  • Certification and Licensure: Current national license is required.


Required Skills

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate effectively with clinical staff.
  • Ability to take instructions or directions.
  • Proficient in the use of PCs and spreadsheets.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to speak and write in English is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to speak and write in both English and Arabic is preferred.
