Join Archimedes School!

At Archimedes School, our mission is to empower students to become confident, independent learners and problem solvers through engaging instruction in STEM and the humanities. We are a team of passionate educators dedicated to building strong academic foundations and supporting lifelong success.

We are a tutoring center located in Redmond, WA, currently seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable AP Computer Science A (CSA) tutor. Most of our instruction is one-on-one and conducted onsite.

About the Role

We're looking for a Java-fluent instructor who can guide high school students through the full AP Computer Science A curriculum and prepare them for both the multiple-choice section and the four free-response questions on the AP exam. CSA is a rigorous programming course, and the right tutor is someone who can break down object-oriented design, debug student code in real time, and walk students through AP-style FRQs without just handing them the answer.

What You'll Be Teaching

The College Board recently revised the AP CSA framework (effective 2025-2026) into four commonly taught units. You'll be tutoring students across all of them:

  • Unit 1: Using Objects and Methods (15-25% of exam) — Java syntax fundamentals, primitive data types, expressions and assignment, casting and integer division, calling void and non-void methods, the Math class and other libraries, String methods, and creating/storing objects as instances of classes.
  • Unit 2: Selection and Iteration (25-35% of exam) — Boolean expressions, if/else and nested conditionals, while loops, for loops, nested iteration, and String traversals using charAt() and length().
  • Unit 3: Class Creation (10-18% of exam) — Designing classes, writing constructors, instance variables, accessor and mutator methods, static variables and methods, encapsulation, scope, and method overloading.
  • Unit 4: Data Collections (30-40% of exam) — 1D arrays, ArrayList traversal and manipulation, 2D arrays with nested loops, common search and sort algorithms (linear search, binary search, selection sort, insertion sort, merge sort), and recursion.

You'll also coach students through the four FRQ types that appear on the exam every year: FRQ 1 Methods & Control Structures, FRQ 2 Class Design, FRQ 3 Array/ArrayList, and FRQ 4 2D Array. Comfort reading the AP Java Quick Reference and writing clean, scorable Java by hand is a must, since the exam is now fully digital in Bluebook.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related STEM field, or in Education
  • 1-2 years of tutoring or teaching experience (minimum)
  • Strong Java programming skills, including object-oriented design
  • Familiarity with the AP CSA framework, the Java Quick Reference, and the FRQ rubric structure
  • Experience with lesson planning
  • Strong ability to engage and motivate students

Bonus: experience tutoring AP CSP, USACO, or competitive programming, or a background in software development.
