APP - Hospitalist

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant (NP/PA) shall provide comprehensive management of patients within his/her given specialty and according to privileges approved by the Medical Staff office. The NP/PA has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. The NP/PA manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The NP/PA establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The NP/PA shall work under the supervision of a physician.

Responsibilities

Collaboration

Interacts with various members of the health care team to meet patient care needs and collaborates with other providers to identify changing patient needs. Identifies teaching/learning needs of patients, documents patient care services in the electronic health record.

Communication

Exhibits skill in the management of conflict situations, functions so as to promote trusting relationships and demonstrates open and honest communication at the unit level. Participates in performance improvement activities as appropriate and promotes and fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and excellence among staff.

Job Skills

Conducts physical examinations, initiates testing and treatment based on scope of practice, identifies normal and abnormal findings and acts upon abnormal findings accordingly. Refers patients to appropriate specialists and/or allied health professionals and provides counseling and instruction regarding common patient problems.

Safety

Protects patients, visitors and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, and identifying patients using two identifiers (i.e., name and date of birth) prior to providing any treatment or procedure. Consults supervising provider as needed.

Scope of Practice

Provides patient care based on privileges as approved by the Medical Staff office.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Heavy WorkExerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly.

Previous experience in a clinical setting is preferred.


Education

Graduate of a master’s prepared Nurse Practitioner program OR Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) approved Physician Assistant training program.

Current license as a Nurse Practitioner from the West Virginia Board of Nursing. Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) OR; Current license as a Physician Assistant by the WV Board of Medicine. Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
