Architectural Technician — Job Description
Summary
Produce detailed technical drawings, construction documentation, and specifications to translate architectural designs into buildable solutions while ensuring compliance with regulations, building codes, and client requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Technical drawings: Prepare accurate working drawings, plans, sections, elevations, and details using CAD/BIM tools.
- Documentation: Produce and maintain construction documentation, schedules, specifications, and revision records.
- BIM/CAD modeling: Develop and manage BIM models (Revit, ArchiCAD) and 2D CAD drawings; ensure model coordination and version control.
- Construction detailing: Create constructible details, material callouts, and assembly instructions for contractors.
- Regulatory compliance: Ensure designs meet building regulations, codes, and statutory requirements; prepare documents for planning and building control submissions.
- Coordination: Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants to resolve technical issues and clashes.
- Site support: Provide technical support during construction, including site visits, inspections, snagging lists, and as-built documentation.
- Material and product research: Specify appropriate materials, components, and systems; evaluate performance, durability, and cost.
- Quality control: Review drawings and specifications for accuracy and compliance with practice standards and client briefs.
- Client liaison: Communicate technical information to clients, contractors, and stakeholders; attend project meetings and present design solutions.
- Project administration: Manage drawing schedules, set up filing systems, and track revisions and issue records.
- Continuous improvement: Keep up to date with industry standards, software updates, and best practices; contribute to office CAD/BIM standards.
Qualifications
- Education: Diploma or degree in Architectural Technology, Architectural Technology & Design, or equivalent (e.g., BSc, HND, HNC).
- Experience: 2–5 years in architectural practice or construction industry (adjust per seniority).
- Technical skills: Proficient in Revit and/or ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, and common office software (MS Office). Experience with BIM workflows and clash detection tools desirable.
- Knowledge: Building regulations, detailing standards, construction methods, and materials.
- Certifications (optional): ARB/CIAT membership or similar professional body accreditation.
