Under the general direction of the Regional Manager, the Area Manager, Cal/OSHA Consultation Services Branch, in the Division of Occupational Safety and Health and the Department of Industrial Relations, has full supervisory and oversight responsibility of a Consultation Services Branch Area Office. The Area Manager sets priorities and evaluates performance of all staff, and travels throughout the State.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. The position involves both office and field work, requiring exposure to various environments and physical demands. Duties include working outdoors in all weather conditions, sitting or standing for extended periods, performing repetitive hand motions, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The role also involves climbing, bending, and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Travel within the assigned area and throughout California, including overnight stays and extended driving or flights, is required for site evaluations, meetings, and training sessions.

Department Information

The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) was established in 1927. Its mission is to improve working conditions for California's wage earners and to advance opportunities for profitable employment in California. DIR administers and enforces laws governing wages, workplace safety and health, apprenticeship training programs, and medical care and other benefits for injured workers.

Special Requirements

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) highlighting your experience that qualifies you for this position must accompany the application. A resume or cover letter cannot be submitted in lieu of the SOQ. Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Valid California Driver’s License and car insurance.

Experience managing a small group of safety engineers/industrial hygienist who conduct employer onsite workplace evaluations. Experience writing and editing technical occupational safety and health evaluation reports. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Ability to plan and organize work activities to meet target dates and production goals. Strong organizational skills required. Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently.

Knowledge of: General principles and practices of safety engineering and health sciences; operations, methods, equipment and safety devices applicable to various types of employment; Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations; applicable provisions of the Labor Code and Health and Safety Code; purposes, organization and activities of the Department of Industrial Relations and the CAL/OSHA program, applicable labor laws and compensation laws; occupational accident and illness prevention techniques; principles of effective supervision and training.

Ability to: Make difficult safety and health surveys; plan, organize, direct and evaluate the work of a team of safety engineers and industrial hygienists providing consultation services to employers; apply the policies of the Department of Industrial Relations, the CAL/OSHA Program and the Consultation Service; analyze occupational injury and illness data and correctly identify actual or potential occupational safety or health hazards; use good judgment; secure and maintain the cooperation of persons and groups concerned with or affected by the CAL/OSHA Consultation Service program; write and speak effectively.

Additional Desirable Qualifications: In appraising the relative qualifications of candidates, consideration will be given to the extent and type of pertinent education and experience over and above that required under "Minimum Qualifications.” Preferred types of additional education and experience are: Experience or additional college work in administration, management, industrial relations, industrial hygiene, safety or other engineering, and other areas directly related to the functions of the CAL/OSHA Consultation Service.
