Job Summary
The Area Materials Manager oversees the efficient operation of materials management at multiple hospitals. This role encompasses procurement, inventory control, and distribution of medical and non-medical supplies, ensuring availability to support patient care. The manager collaborates with hospital leadership, clinical teams, vendors, and finance to maintain cost-effective supply chain operations in line with regulatory standards and hospital policies.

Key Responsibilities:

Inventory Management:

Maintain optimal inventory levels across both locations to prevent shortages or overstock. Implement inventory control strategies and perform regular audits. Utilize inventory management software to ensure accurate inventory quantities and value.

Procurement and Vendor Relations:

Manage vendor contracts and pricing negotiations to secure favorable terms. Ensure all purchasing complies with hospital budgets and policies.

Distribution and Logistics:

Oversee receiving, storage, and distribution processes, ensuring timely delivery to hospital departments. Manage warehousing and materials handling for maximum efficiency.

Team Leadership and Staff Supervision:

Lead, train, and supervise materials management staff across two locations. Set performance goals, conduct evaluations, and promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Compliance and Safety:

Ensure all operations meet OSHA, Joint Commission, FDA, and other regulatory requirements. Maintain thorough documentation and reporting.

Budget and Cost Control:

Develop and manage the materials budget. Identify cost-saving measures and waste reduction opportunities without sacrificing care quality. Minimize off-contract purchasing.

Collaboration:

Work closely with clinical, administrative, and financial teams to address operational needs and strategic objectives. Participate in multidisciplinary committees like PAM.

Data Management and Reporting:

Utilize inventory management software and ERP systems to generate reports, analyze trends, and forecast needs.

Organizational Skills:

Prioritize and multitask effectively across two distant locations. Delegate tasks and ensure direct reports perform duties efficiently. Manage time proficiently to address the responsibilities involved in managing two sites.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Supply Chain Management, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in healthcare materials management or supply chain operations, ideally in a hospital setting.
  • Strong understanding of supply chain principles, inventory control, and procurement.
  • Experience with materials management systems (ERP, MultiView/MediTech preferred).
  • Excellent negotiation, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and develop actionable plans.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and accreditation processes.
  • Certification (e.g., Certified Materials & Resources Professional - CMRP) is a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • Hospital environment requiring cross-departmental interaction.
  • May involve physical tasks including lifting and moving supplies.
  • Occasional evening, weekend, or on-call work required.
  • Responsible for providing on-site backup coverage when needed.
