Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Office of the Kansas Attorney General’s (OAG's) Civil Division is accepting applications to fill an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) position to be assigned to perform work for the Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The OAG is an organization that values individuals who strive to work in a team environment, where a positive attitude and willingness to assist others is critical. Successful candidates must be well-organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, punctual and prompt.


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the attorney for the Director of Alcoholic Beverage Control and the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control pursuant to K.S.A. 41-201. This involves providing legal advice and counsel or opinions to the Director or Division regarding the enforcement of the Kansas liquor laws. The attorney shall provide legal advice to the client on matters pertaining to issuing state licenses and permits, monitoring product flow, conducting compliance reviews of licensed premises and enforcing restrictions on underage access to alcoholic beverages, and a variety of other statutory violations. This attorney also attends staff meetings as necessary or directed.
  • Serve as the litigation attorney in disciplinary actions taken by the ABC against licensees. This involves reviewing cases investigated by Agents of the ABC, and prosecuting and issuing orders in a timely manner. This also involves assisting the Solicitor’s Division of the OAG in the representation of ABC in appeals before the Kansas Court of Appeals or the Kansas Supreme Court on such cases.
  • Respond appropriately to constituent correspondence, email and telephone calls.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited law school
  • Certificate of admission to and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas
  • A valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) or more years of civil and/or administrative law experience.

Travel:

You would travel to locations required to competently and diligently discharge the assigned duties. Limited in-state travel is required. A valid driver's license is required when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

  • As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment screening process to include a fingerprint and name-based criminal history records check and reference/background check of past and present employers. The pre-employment screening process will be waived for current OAG personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements.
  • In this position, you would be authorized access to private information to the extent necessary to perform the assigned duties. Employees of the OAG are required to protect against unauthorized access to such information, ensure the security and privacy of such information, and disclose any anticipated threats or hazards to such information. Employees must be cautious not to release this information to the public or other individuals, including but not limited to OAG employees who have not been authorized or who do not have a legitimate organizational, departmental, or business need to know. Any questions regarding releasing such information to another person should be directed to the employee’s supervisor.
  • State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate. A valid Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate is a condition of employment for all employees of the Office of Kansas Attorney General. Applicants (including non-residents) who receive a formal job offer for a State job, are required to obtain a valid Tax Clearance within ten (10) days of the job offer. A Tax Clearance can be obtained through the Kansas Department of Revenue who reviews individual accounts for compliance with Kansas Tax Law.
