We’re looking for an Assistant City Attorney to join our City Attorney’s Office. This role performs professional legal work involving misdemeanor prosecution and provides legal services to City departments. You’ll handle everything from reviewing police reports and evaluating evidence to preparing cases for trial, negotiating plea agreements, advising law enforcement, and working directly with victims. This position reports to the Deputy City Attorney and works closely with the City Attorney. It may involve functional supervision of legal support staff.

- Completion of Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.

One to two (1-2) years in the practice of law as an attorney or law clerk, in a criminal law field.

One to two (1-2) years experience prosecuting criminal cases at the misdemeanor and/or felony level preferred.

Current and continuing membership, in good standing, in the Arizona State Bar or able to obtain membership in the Arizona State Bar within six (6) month of hire.
Valid Arizona driver’s license or ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
Strong knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, trial processes, and rules of evidence.

Skill in legal research, legal writing, trial preparation, oratory and verbal persuasion and general skills in litigation.
Ability to communicate effectively with victims, law enforcement, defense attorneys, and court personnel.
Misdemeanor Prosecution (40%) Serve as a prosecutor for misdemeanor cases in Kingman Municipal Court, including reviewing police reports, determining charges, preparing cases, attending hearings, trying cases, negotiating pleas, and serving as Special Prosecutor when required.
Case Preparation & Legal Analysis (30%) Conduct factual and legal analysis, interview witnesses and complainants, draft legal documents, determine restitution and probation conditions, monitor compliance, research legal issues, and prepare cases for jury and non-jury trials.
Victim & Law Enforcement Communication (20%) Communicate with victims regarding their rights and case progress, collaborate with police personnel on legal matters and investigative procedures, provide guidance on cases, and work with City departments on nuisance and abatement issues.
Professional Development & Operational Improvement (10%) Participate in continuing legal education, review case outcomes with supervisors, stay current on changes in criminal and civil law, contribute to improved processes, and maintain regular attendance, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Work Contacts

Regular and frequent contacts with victims of crimes, as well as representatives of various social service agencies providing services to the victims.

Regular and frequent contact with various City departments and police agencies, and officers of the court at all levels. Contact with other prosecutorial agencies as needed.

Regular and frequent contacts with the other members of the State Bar, particularly defense attorneys and other prosecutors, regarding the resolution of cases.

Contacts may involve confidential, sensitive and controversial subject matter and therefore requires the exercise of considerable tact and discretion.
