Provo City is hiring a full-time professional to perform legal work as an Assistant City Attorney on civil and/or criminal cases, with responsibility to provide counsel on legal issues in the City's Legal Department.

What is the compensation package?
Pay Rate: (G38, G39, G41) $95,122 - $151,795 annually (depending on qualifications)

What are the main duties?
Attorney I:
  • Review civil and/or criminal cases and claims and evaluate strengths and weaknesses.
  • Review complaints, statements, police reports, and written subpoenas.
  • Conduct legal research and present findings.
  • Represent the City in court and at hearings including arguing cases and motions in court or before an administrative body, both in civil and criminal matters.
  • Prosecute misdemeanors and infractions, including appeals.
  • Interview witnesses.
  • Prepare for trials.
  • Coordinate efforts with various law enforcement agencies, government agencies, the public, attorneys, and other office staff.
  • Review assigned criminal cases for probable cause.
  • Authorize issuance of complaints or informations.
  • Assist in providing legal counsel and support to various departments as assigned.
  • Prepare pleadings, motions, orders, and other papers.
  • Draft ordinances and other documents.
  • Maintain knowledge and skill levels in current case decisions and legislation.
  • Assist staff members as needed and perform other related duties as required.
Attorney II:
  • Perform the essential duties of lower-level attorneys.
  • May represent the City in civil litigation including evaluating, negotiating, and settling claims.
  • Provide leadership as needed to junior professional staff, including supervising legal interns and research projects.
Senior Attorney:
  • Perform work of lower-level attorneys as needed.
  • Confer with litigants and advise others on how to confer.
  • May oversee and coordinate legal support to the Municipal Council, including providing Council legal representation at Council meetings and giving legally sound responses to requests.
  • Prepare and negotiate land sales and acquisitions.
  • Assist in department budget preparation and submission.
  • May supervise subordinate staff members and/or professional legal counsel retained by the City on special matters.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
What are the minimum qualifications?
At All Levels
  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Valid, lawful driver’s license.
  • Active Utah State Bar Association membership or other authorization to practice law in Utah.
Attorney II:
  • Three (3) years of legal experience as a practicing attorney, including trial experience.
  • Active Utah State Bar Association membership (including admission to practice before all state courts and, when required by the City Attorney, the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah).
Senior Attorney
  • Six (6) years of legal experience as a practicing attorney, including trial experience and progressively responsible supervisory experience.
  • Active Utah State Bar Association membership (including admission to practice before all state courts and, when required by the City Attorney, the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah).
What is the selection process?
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on October 9, 2025. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.
If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
