Assistant Controller

Summary of Position

The Assistant Controller provides strategic oversight and leadership for key accounting operations, including accounts payable, travel, and payroll. The position also supports the supervision of accounts receivable and cashiering activities to ensure accuracy, compliance, and consistency in financial processes.

In addition, the Assistant Controller serves as a key strategic partner to the Controller, acting on their behalf when delegated to represent the department, make operational decisions, enforce financial policies, and provide guidance on complex accounting matters. This includes supporting the development and implementation of long-range financial strategies, strengthening internal controls, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting continuous process improvement across the institution’s financial operations.

Key responsibilities include direct supervision of AP, Payroll, Travel, and work study staff. Additionally, supporting all Business Services staff; managing daily departmental operations; overseeing general ledger activity, reconciliations, and monthly close; supporting audits and external reporting; and maintaining thorough documentation of financial processes and controls. The Assistant Controller also contributes to special projects, committee work, and ad hoc reporting as needed to support institutional goals.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good communication skills, good customer service skills, demonstrated intermediate to advanced spreadsheet (Excel) skills, familiarity with data warehousing tools.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or other closely related fields.
  • At least three years progressively responsible professional accounting experience. At least three years directly supervising two or more fiscal employees including performance planning and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and government accounting standards as evidenced by at least three years’ experience performing accounting for and/or auditing of state-funded agencies or higher-education institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in accounting. Master’s degree in finance, Business, or closely related discipline, provided that all credits earned include at least 21 semester credits of accounting, including both graduate and undergraduate credit hours.
  • Certified Public Accountant or candidate, Certified Federal Grants Manager, or other appropriate fiscal or grant related certification.
  • Experience with accounting in a state agency, community college, or other higher-education setting.
  • Audit/public accounting experience.

Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.

  • This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.

Starting Salary

Starting salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience. This is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.
