Assistant Coordinator - Writing Center

Position Announcement

Joining Utah Valley University as the Writing Center Assistant Coordinator offers the chance to make a meaningful impact on student learning and peer-education programs. You’ll work closely with the Writing Center Director and a dedicated team to maintain high-quality services, strengthen program alignment with university goals, and contribute to a welcoming environment where writers at all levels can thrive.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Staff Education and Supervision: Help onboard, train, and supervise writing center tutors. Supervise staff, including helping mentor and discipline employees under the direction of the director. Assist with employee timekeeping and payroll as needed.
  • Scheduling and Data Management: Build and maintain staff schedules for Writing Center programs. Set up schedules for all Writing Center programs using the WCOnline scheduling and appointment platform or an equivalent. Manage daily and long-term schedule changes, including sub requests and call-outs. Ensure data collection, maintenance, and archiving for Writing Center programs and resources. Pull data for assessment, strategic planning, and reporting, as requested by the director or coordinator.
  • Manage the Daily Operations of the Writing Center: Work with staff to ensure Writing Center programs and services operate smoothly and that stakeholders can access the resources they need. This includes ensuring tutorial services and coordinating info booths, events, presentations, and workshops. Keep current on best practices for program management and work with the administrative team to ensure quality program management.
  • Communication: Respond to daily internal and external Writing Center communication, including email, Teams channels and posts, phone communication, and in-person requests. Work with the administrative team to send out weekly updates to Writing Center staff.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Assists with tutoring students in the graduate writing center, graduate prep, professional documents, master's and PhD level writing assignments, GRE prep, etc., and helps conduct workshops for higher-stakes writing.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or three years of post-secondary education and one year of relevant work experience; OR any combination of post-secondary education and experience to total four years.
  • Experience with tutoring/teaching in an academic or professional organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preference given to those who have completed CRLA L1+ certification and/or have completed a Writing Center training course (such as UVST 3110) with a grade of A- or better.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge


  • Knowledge of and experience with student support programs, including a good understanding of the learning process and learning differences; knowledge of tutoring/tutorial strategies.
  • Knowledge of and experience with designing, planning, and implementing academic workshops and outreach initiatives.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to student experiences in an academic environment.
  • Knowledge and strong foundation of academic writing, especially at the graduate and professional levels.
  • Knowledge of academic and professional genres, such as theses, dissertations, journal articles, research reports, CVs, cover letters, etc.
  • Knowledge of CRLA certification preferred.
Skills
  • Skills in research, analysis, and development to identify program needs, utilize available resources, and create positive program results; skills in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Skills in coordinating promotional events and activities and developing marketing to target particular student groups as appropriate.
  • Skilled with various software, including Microsoft suite, Google suite, Teams, MyWCOnline, and/or other learning center platforms.
  • Skilled in both written and verbal communication.
Abilities
  • Ability to foster academic partnerships with faculty, staff, students, and students of all disciplines and academic backgrounds.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to motivate writers.
  • Ability to supervise, train, observe, and evaluate student employees.
