POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Pottawatomie County Attorney, the Assistant County Attorney is an exempt position under FLSA. The primary goal of this position is to prosecute violations against state and local laws. As an Assistant County Attorney, this position is responsible for working with law enforcement agencies to determine whether there is adequate evidence to file charges against individuals and secondly working successfully to bring those cases to successful closure in protecting the public safety, health, welfare and interest. This employee must exercise considerable independent judgement. Information handled in this office is of a confidential nature. Supervises staff in the preparation of documents and papers.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:
Minimum qualifications include a juris doctorate from an accredited college or university and admission to the Kansas Bar. Membership in the Kansas Bar Association is preferred. Two to four years’ similar or related experience is preferred. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
Employee must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to read and interpret manuals, legal documents and court proceedings. The employee is preferred to possess a thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances and strong organizational skills are required.
PROBLEM SOLVING:
Independent problem solving is involved in this position.
DECISION MAKING:
Moderate decision-making is involved in this position. Employee must provide subordinate personnel with work assignments.

SUPERVISION:
This position acts with little to no direct supervision from the Pottawatomie County Attorney and exercises frequent supervisory control over subordinate personnel.
PERSONAL RELATIONS:
Daily contact with the defendants, general public, co-workers, supervisory personnel and elected or appointed officials is expected.
