Position Overview
The Village of Tuckahoe Justice Court is seeking a part-time Assistant Court Clerk to support court operations through specialized clerical and administrative work. Under the supervision of the Court Clerk, this role is responsible for maintaining court records, processing legal documents, assisting with financial reporting, and providing professional service to attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and the public.
This position requires accuracy, discretion, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate clearly in a public-facing legal environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, process, and maintain court records, legal documents, forms, and reports
- Enter complaints and case data into court dockets (Motor Vehicle, Civil, and Criminal)
- Prepare and issue summonses and warrants; submit required lists to the County Clerk
- Complete certificates of conviction and forward dispositions to appropriate state and local agencies
- Handle court mail and correspondence
- Collect fines and fees, issue receipts, and maintain accurate financial accounts
- Assist with preparation of monthly financial reports submitted to the Department of Audit and Control
- Use computer systems including word processing, spreadsheets, email, calendars, and databases
- Explain court procedures to attorneys and members of the public clearly and professionally
- May assume limited supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Court Clerk
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of office procedures, terminology, and standard office equipment
- Familiarity with criminal and civil law, court procedures, and legal documents
- Proficiency with common computer applications (Word, Excel, email, databases)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
- Ability to interact tactfully and effectively with the public and legal professionals
- High level of accuracy, integrity, dependability, and attention to detail
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and
- One (1) year of general clerical experience, including or supplemented by six (6) months of clerical and/or word processing experience in a court, attorney’s office, or similar legal setting
Substitutions:
- Thirty (30) college credits may substitute for one (1) year of general clerical experience
- Eight (8) college credits in Criminal Law, Business Law, or a closely related field may substitute for three (3) months of specialized experience (no substitution for the remaining three months)
Special Requirements
- Must meet all requirements of the New York State Public Officers Law
- Must be a New York State resident at the time of appointment
- Local residency requirements may apply
Compensation
- $35.00 per hour
- Part-time schedule
- This is a public-sector position subject to civil service requirements
